Congratulations to the Fine Arts music and choral students who performed at Festival Disney in Orlando last weekend. Please read Fine Arts Director Don Johnson's account of the trip:
The Band and Chorus music festival trip to Disney was a tremendous success in many ways. On Thursday, March 21, three charter buses rolled away from Landmark loaded with 150 students and chaperones headed for Orlando to participate in Festival Disney. Friday was spent performing for the judges in four different locations throughout the Disney World properties. The Jazz Band started things off with a bang with an awesome performance at the Boardwalk Resort Atlantic Dance Hall. Back on the buses for the 8th Grade Honors Chorus performance at the Ballroom of the Americas in Disney's Contemporary Resort. After a solid performance, the students were surprised to learn that one of the adjudicators, and the one who did the onstage clinic, was Russell Robinson, who was the arranger for one of the pieces they had just sung. Surprise!!! He was very pleased. After lunch the group headed to Saratoga Springs Performance Hall where the 7th & 8th Grade Women's Ensemble and the 7th & 8th Grade Mixed Chorus both had fantastic performances and received high praise from the on stage clinicians. The final performance was at the Premier Theater at Hollywood Studios where the combined Concert Band filled the room with a huge sound and a solid performance.
Saturday was spent at Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios with the Festival Disney Award Ceremony being held at Lights, Motor, Action Theater in the evening. The Concert Band was recognized, as well as the Jazz Band, receiving "Excellent" ratings from the Judges. The 8th Grade Honors, 7th & 8th Grade Concert Choir, and the 7th & 8th Grade Women's ensemble all received "Superior" ratings from the judges with the Concert Choir placing First "Gold" and the Women's Ensemble placing Second "Silver". Way to go!
However, our best success came from the fellowship and new relationships built between the students. Fun was had by all, and the students represented themselves, their families, Landmark, and ultimately their God, excellently on and off the stage. In fact a group of our girls were standing in line for a ride when a women approached them and asked what school they were from. She told them that she wanted to let them know that of all of the school groups and students she had seen all weekend, ours were the only ones who were behaving respectfully, dressed appropriately, and did not have their faces stuck in their phones the entire time. Sweet music to my ears - now that is a success story.
