Landmark September Sports Recap

Cross Country

The varsity and middle school cross country teams competed at five meets in September, including our own First Annual Landmark Cross Country Invitational.  Highlights from this month include varsity girls finishing 2nd at the new class A state meet course in Macon, coming within two points of winning over class 6A Lowndes County in a meet of 21 schools.  Varsity individual medals were won by Paul Orr, Lindy Long, and Kathryn Foreman at our September meets.  Our middle school teams have been doing well also with a girls' 1st place finish and a boys' 3rd place finish at Macon.

 Varsity Football

The varsity football team went 2-1 this September with wins over Mt. Paran and Mt. Vernon while losing to Wilkinson County in a match-up of top 10 teams.  The running game has paced the War Eagles offensive attack and has been led by junior RB Jeremiah Kirkland and senior QB Cole Higbie, along with a physical offensive line.  Defensively the War Eagles have caused numerous turnovers and registered a shutout in their final outing of September.  Senior DL Jacob Cobb led the defensive line in tackles during the month, while Junior LB William Higbie led the team in tackles.  October will see the War Eagles continue battle in region play while continuing their push toward the postseason. The jv football team won two games and lost one during the month of September. Despite being severely outnumbered on the sideline, the team fought hard for four quarters of football each game and never backed down from what appeared to be overwhelming odds.

Middle School Football

The middle school football team went 1-2 in the month of September.  They opened the season with a 2-point loss on the road before coming back home and winning their home opener by a large margin, followed by a road loss against a very tough Wesleyan squad.   The team used their balanced offensive attack and very aggressive defense to be extremely competitive in each game and are gaining valuable game experience as the season progresses.

Volleyball

The varsity volleyball team is currently ranked #2 in class A by the GA PREP coaches poll  and #4 by the AJC / Score Atlanta poll. The team stats are outstanding as indicated by the following rankings: #1 in most kills, #3 in most kills per game, #4 in attack percentage, #1 in aces, #8 in aces per game, #1 in assists per game, #1 for number of blocks, #11 in blocks per game, #1 in dig count, and #15 in digs per game. In September, the jv volleyball team won 16 matches and lost 3 very close matches to Columbus, McIntosh and Whitewater.    Despite illnesses and injuries, this team's ability to play as "one" has made these lady War Eagles a team to contend with.   This past weekend they won rematch against Columbus to take home the gold in the Milton Freshman Tournament.

Middle school volleyball continued strong in the month of September going 15-9. Landmark also hosted the Landmark Junior War Eagles Invitational on September 8, its first ever middle school volleyball tournament. The middle school team started off strong by going 3-0 during pool play. They won the first round of the bracket play but lost a hard fought match 1-2 to the Heritage School. Landmark ended up taking 4th place in the tournament and they finish up the season on Saturday, October 6th with the Middle School Area Volleyball Tournament. Go Lady War Eagles!

Softball

The varsity softball team continued to work hard against both region and non-region foes in September, with successful wins over Galloway, Our Lady of Mercy, Temple, Mt. Zion (who had previously beaten the Lady War Eagles), Walker, and Mt. Vernon. They are working hard as they prepare to go into the region tournament on Wednesday, October 3rd. Good luck in post-season ladies! The middle school softball team continued their winning run in September. The team concluded their incredibly successful season with exciting games against Woodward, Strong Rock, Arlington, Paideia, Whitefield, and ELCA. These girls and their coaches worked hard this season to come away with only two losses all season long - both of which were to the same team. Great job ladies!
