ISNA Majlis (Board) Member Featured in Front Burner Blog: Anti-Muslim Sentiment in Irving (And the Imam Who Has To Tolerate It)

In the paper today, Avi Selk has a lengthy story about some anti-Muslim foolishness going on in Irving. It centers on a religious tribunal that is supposedly going to usurp the U.S. Constitution and ruin America. (I'm exaggerating only a little bit.) Last night, the City Council voted 5-4 to support a bill authored by Rep. Jeff Leach (R-Plano) that would forbid such tribunals from using foreign law in their rulings (which is already illegal).

I wrote about all this for the April issue of D Magazine, which won't mail to subscribers for another three days. So I'm posting the article hereBefore I wrote my story, I spent some time with Imam Zia ul-Haque Sheikh, the head of the Islamic Center of Irving and a man who has far more patience and compassion than I do....

ISNA Mentioned by Indiana Public Media: Syrian Refugees Find New Homes In Indiana

The smell of a strong, dark coffee, poured into ornately designed tea cups, mingles with flowing conversations spoken in Arabic and interspersed with laughter. Two women wearing hijabs sit on the living room couch as they drink. One appears to be in her early twenties. The other still has a vibrance that glows when she smiles, but her face also bears a slight impression that hints at a longer journey. A man sits on a smaller couch nearby. His youngest son, who is 6 years old, rests his head on his father's lap...

Meet the Education Forum Speaker: Alex Kronemer

Alexander Kronemer is the co-founder and executive director of Unity Productions Foundation (UPF), a non-profit educational film production company with the mission of working for peace and understanding through the power of the media. UPF's nine films  have won dozens of awards and have been seen by over 150 million people worldwide.

Five years ago, UPF launched a dialogue project around its films, bringing people of diverse backgrounds together for discussion and exchange. To date, the initiative has resulted in over 20,000 dialogues, engaging more than 100,000 people in discussion and exchange. Many of those who have participated include policy makers, opinion leaders, and cultural change agents.

Mr. Kronemer also helped lead UPF into its recent work in Hollywood. In collaboration with the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, UPF has founded a resource center on Islam and Muslims called Muslims on Screen and Television (MOST) for writers and producers of television and film.

In addition to his work at UPF, Mr. Kronemer is a frequent writer and lecturer on religion and Islamic Civilization. He holds a Master Degree in Theological Studies from Harvard University. Before founding UPF, he worked as a diplomat at the U.S. Department of State, focusing on the Middle East, Human Rights, and Religious Freedom. Earlier in his career, he was part of the team that helped pass the landmark legislation that

founded the U.S. Institute of Peace.

Mr. Kronemer will be the keynote speaker at the banquet during the 16th Annual ISNA Education Forum.
