ISNA Welcomes Program Coordinator, Nadia Hassan

(Plainfield, IN 01/27/15) The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) would like to welcome Nadia Hassan as our new program coordinator for our Office for Interfaith and Community Alliances (IOICA) located in Washington D.C.

Ms. Hassan brings to IOICA a strong background in community service, advocacy and activism.

Prior to joining ISNA, Hassan organized the Villa Park Peace Coalition after the right-wing Republican Party's heinous protest that shocked the city of Yorba Linda and left a looming sense of fear and social disorientation amongst the residents of Orange County.  With the support of the Muslim and the interfaith community,  she mobilized more than 500 people to a peaceful, silent counter-protest outside of the Villa Park City  Hall chambers.  She founded the Villa Park Peace Coalition as a means to counteract hate in Orange County.  Hassan's personal experience with Islamophobia has allowed her to redirect her talents toward writing, education, public speaking, and empowering women

He has built strong coalitions with interfaith partners to advocate on a range of justice issues, such as ending torture and protecting religious minorities in Arab countries. A naturalized American citizen, Syeed gives a public face to his organization's vision"to be an exemplary and unifying Islamic organization in North America that contributes to the betterment of the Muslim community and society at large."

ISNA Mentioned in The Hill: US-Belgian initiative is blueprint for Muslim engagement

Belgium, a small country of 11 million that likes to refer to itself as the capital of Europe, stands at the intersection of a global struggle against extremism. As Belgian troops mobilize on public streets, and police raids continue against suspected terror sites, the world observes how this European nation deals with the problem of deepening radicalism facing many societies, including our own...

ISNA Joins International Muslim-Christian Conference

WASHINGTON -On January 14, 2015, committee members of the U.S. Muslim & Christian Coalition (MCC) convened its Second Interreligious Summit at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church in Washington DC. The MCC made the important decision to hold its first international conference on the 1st and 2nd of May, expand the coalition membership, and reach out to other minority groups of the Arab world. The MCC represents a diverse range of Muslim and Christian leaders, churches, mosques, Islamic centers, and organizations, along with other community members, who are putting their faith into action to protect Christians and other religious minorities in the Arab world and to further coexistence and peace...

Register today for the Divinity & Diversity Conference
February 19-21, 2015
Dublin & Hilliard, Ohio

The United States has been a deeply religious society since its inception. Today, our religious landscape is changing as communities become increasingly diverse. Americans are more likely to see temples and mosques down the road beside the church, and communities from all traditions are hearing services lead in English, Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew, and more. Particularly in this post-9/11 context, what does this increased diversity mean for religious leadership?

This February, join national and local interfaith leaders as we discuss what this diversity means. Come share knowledge and experience of what skills will strengthen interreligious relationships and build resilient communities in America in the coming years. Workshops will provide opportunities to improve religious literacy, to learn about changing demographics, and to develop basic skills for responding to challenges presented by this increasing diversity, especially responding to religious discrimination.

Registration for the Shoulder to Shoulder co-sponsored Divinity & Diversity Conference is now open!  The Divinity & Diversity Conference will run Thursday, February 19 - Saturday, February 21 in Dublin, Ohio.  The banquet will be held at the Makoy Center (5462 Center Street, Hilllard, OH 43026) from 7:00 to 9:30 PM on Thursday, February 19, 2015. The banquet will honor the interfaith efforts of Rev. Stephen Smith and Imran Malik. The keynote address will be given by Sheikh Muhammad Al- Yaqubi, followed by entertainment by a local artist.
