MEET AN ISNA SPEAKER:
Iman Hashem  
Iman Hashem is Director of Arabic Language Programs at the Occidental College Foreign Language Project. She regularly designs and conducts workshops, nationwide, for teachers of foreign and heritage languages, most often for teachers of Arabic.  Mrs. Hashem was a member of the writing committee for the Standards for Learning Arabic and for California's World Language Content Standards. Currently, she consults for the Los Angeles Unified School District and K-12 Islamic schools where she designs Arabic language programs and supports program improvement in language and culture.  She is also the Arabic consultant/coach for the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) FLAP Arabic dual immersion and FLES program. Mrs. Hashem works at California State University, Long Beach where she teaches world language methods and where she designed courses in elementary, intermediate and advanced Arabic for non-native and heritage speakers. She was the recipient of the Special Achievement Award from the New Horizon System in 1996, CLTA's President's Award for Leadership in Language Education in 2003, and (CLTA) and (CWLP) Outstanding Teacher Award 2012.

 

Iman Hashem will be a presenter at the 15th Annual Education Forum.
Gun Prevention Sabbath Weekend March 13-16
 
Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) is joining 50 other national denominations and faith groups for the March 13-16 National Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath Weekend. We must continue to raise our voice against the preventable loss of life.

ISNA Communications Director Gives Presentation to Journalism Students at Local University

On Wednesday March 5th, Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) Communications Director Edgar Hopida spoke to journalism students on "Covering Islam in the Media" at Ball State University located in Muncie, Indiana.  The presentation consisted of the basic beliefs and practices of Islam as well as common negative frames that journalists typically use when covering stories about Islam and Muslims. Hopida also provided alternative frames and stories that journalists can cover that reflect more accurately, the diversity of the American Muslim community...
