Certification of Sustainability Professionals Advances at ISSP Conference 2014

By ISSP President and EcoSTEPS Sustainability

Partner Julian Crawford of Sydney, Australia

Dear Fellow ISSP Members,

Julian Crawford

It was a 'who's who' of sustainability at ISSP Conference 2014 in Denver, Colorado this November. Leaders in sustainability from around the world came together to network, educate, discuss, and honor leaders within the profession. The timing couldn't have been better, with opening day coinciding with the historic climate change agreement between the U.S. and China.

The agenda included the important task of shaping the future of sustainability. Building on the groundwork that ISSP has laid over the past several years, the Board of Directors announced that the timing is now right to energetically advance the development of a professional certification. Over two hundred sustainability professionals at the Conference enthusiastically supported this path to certification; expect to hear more on this in early 2015.

The Conference itself was an outstanding success with terrific speakers, workshops and networking. A highlight was the induction of the new Hall of Fame honorees and their subsequent panel discussion. Hunter Lovins, in her inimitable fashion, got the attention of the audience when she shouted, "Get ready for a !#@% storm!"  (You can fill in the blank.)  "If we continue to conduct business as usual, we are looking at a collapse of all living systems."

We're appreciative that ISSP's media partner, ReNewable Now, was there filming exclusive video coverage and interviews. These will be released over the next few weeks.

As we look forward to 2015 and COP 21 in Paris, ISSP continues to work toward bringing cohesion and definition to the emerging field of sustainability. Our efforts to date have included researching the professional competencies required of people working in the field, as well as an exploration of the terminology, or lexicon, used by professionals around the globe. The latest iteration of our work is the ISSP Professional Body of Knowledge that defines the skills, terms, knowledge and attributes used by professionals practicing in this field.

2015 is going to be a defining year for the sustainability profession and ISSP is proud of you, our members, for supporting this vital work.

Julian Crawford

Three Trends in Employee Engagement in CSR: Mobile, Personalization, and Gamification

Written for ISSP by Lindsey Goodchild, founder and CEO of Nudge Rewards

Creating successful CSR programs that actively involve employees and promote sustainable innovation in the workplace can be a challenge - but a surmountable one.

As much as we are living in an increasingly connected world, we are still challenged with communicating to employees in an effective manner. To reach today's on-the-move and geographically dispersed workforce, the past styles of communicating through in-office meetings, email blasts, and posters just won't suffice. Today's employees expect timely, relevant, and customized communication in easily digestible pieces and a built in recognition and rewards system.

To meet this emerging need, HR and CSR leaders are turning to three trends to engage employees in sustainability initiatives: mobile, personalization, and gamification.
