ISSP Conference to Celebrate

Sustainability Hall of Fame

By ISSP President and EcoSTEPS Sustainability

Partner Julian Crawford of Sydney, Australia

Dear Fellow ISSP Members,

Julian Crawford

The final preparations are being made

to upcoming ISSP Conference 2014 in Denver, November 13 and 14. It's not too late to join us for what promises to be our best ever conference - by sustainability professionals, for sustainability professionals. The focus is on really useful and practical information and network building for people who want to make a difference to their organizations and communities.

One of the initiatives of ISSP that makes me particularly proud and which really exemplifies all that we are striving for is the ISSP Sustainability Hall of Fame.

Since its inauguration in 2011, the Hall of Fame has served to formally recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to sustainability and to the professionals who dedicate their careers to the field of sustainability. Candidates, nominated by ISSP members, are honored based on their accomplishments in the areas of experience, education, innovation, reach, publication and service to the industry. Previous inductees have included luminaries such as: Ray Anderson, Amory B. Lovins, Karl-Henrik Robert, John Elkington, Hazel Henderson, Bob Willard, Alan AtKisson, L. Hunter Lovins, and Gil Friend.

At a ceremony during ISSP Conference 2014 in Denver, four more major figures in the sustainability profession will join the ISSP Sustainability Hall of Fame™. They are:

  • Susan Burns, CEO of Global Footprint Network
  • Jeffrey Hollender, Founder and CEO of Hollender Sustainable Brands
  • Joel Makower, Chairman and Executive Editor of GreenBiz Group Inc.
  • Mathis Wackernagel, Co-Creator of the Ecological Footprint and President of Global Footprint Network

The ISSP Board and I look forward to sharing all of the excitement and learnings of the Denver Conference with you.

Julian Crawford

SUSTAINABILITY AND INDUSTRY

Arpin Is First Moving Company to Utilize S-CORE(TM) Multi-Purpose Sustainability Assessment Tool

ISSP Executive Director Maureen Hart recently visited Arpin Group to help executives there, including Peter Arpin, partner of Arpin Group and host of ReNewable Now, measure their sustainability programs against other companies, while assisting them to chart a course for a greener future.

"Arpin Group is the first company in the moving and transportation industry to perform our sustainability self-assessment," said Maureen. "The purpose of our visit today was not to grant a certification, but rather provide the tools for Arpin Group executives to assess their company against existing sustainability benchmarks covering a variety of practice areas. We want Arpin executives to both celebrate their progress and identify areas where sustainability practices can be further enhanced."

REVIEW: Responsible Leadership: Lessons from the Front Line of Sustainability and Ethics.

Written by: Mark Moody-Stuart

Reviewed by: Bob Kollm

Mark Moody-Stuart offers a rare glimpse into the C-suite of multi-billion dollar multinational corporations. Relating experiences from the strategic decision making level provides valuable insight to an array of readers: students across disciplines - and especially those in a graduate business program; professionals at all levels; sustainability practitioners; NGO and non-profit professionals; government employees; elected officials; and those who wonder how corporate decisions are made. Many professors will likely find at least one chapter that can be added to a course-pack.

HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW

The Right Way to Present Your Business Case

Written by Carolyn O'Hara for Harvard Business Review

You've already put a great deal of work into preparing a solid business case for your project or idea. But when it comes to the critical presentation phase, how do you earn the support of decision makers in the room? How do you present your case so that it's clear and straightforward while also persuasive?

Here's what the experts say:

Do
* Tell a story - it will make your case more persuasive and memorable
* Spell out the business need - it gives the audience a reason to listen
* Have both a short and long version ready - you never know how much time you will have

Don't
* Overlook stakeholders' pet concerns - address them directly to win allies in the room
* Overwhelm your audience with needless detail
* Read directly from your slides - no one wants to attend a boring read-along

PARTNERSHIPS IN SUSTAINABILITY

Updates on Sustainable Business Policy from the American Sustainable Business Council

ISSP is proud to announce our new partnership with the American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC). ASBC's mission is to educate and inform the public and policymakers about the benefits of a more sustainable economy, as well as policies and practices that can help the economy become more sustainable.

Follow these links for ASBC's updates and policy action calls on federal-level legislation and regulations:

Clean Water Needs Business Support: Voice your support for the EPA's proposed "Waters of the U.S." rule, which clarifies what types of upstream waters are protected under the Clean Water Act and provides a consistent regulatory framework, giving businesses confidence that American streams and rivers will remain available to all.

Join the Companies for Safer Chemicals Campaign: Push for meaningful reform of the Toxic Substances Control Act, which has not been updated since its passage in 1976, to improve the scientific information, transparency, and support for innovation needed to bring safer chemicals to market.

Speak Out for the EPA Carbon Rules Before December 1: The public comment period for the EPA's vital proposal to tackle climate change by reducing carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants ends Dec. 1st - make your voice heard!
