Keeping Up with the Fast-Moving Sustainability Agenda

By ISSP President and EcoSTEPS Sustainability Partner Julian Crawford of Sydney, Australia

Dear Fellow ISSP Members,

The pace of change seems unrelenting and even accelerating. We're all seeing it and feeling it - especially in the sustainability arena. It's exciting! But it's also a little daunting.... When I started my involvement in sustainability consulting back in 1999, we were celebrating thirty years since the first moon landing: "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". Since then the world has added over a billion people, and we've learnt to pronounce and spell words such as 'sustainability', 'google' and 'ecological footprint'.

Julian Crawford

I live in Australia and when I first learnt about ISSP a couple of years ago I was both intrigued and excited. Intrigued as to who might have had the foresight and energy to start such a global gathering place for  sustainability practitioners. Excited because I felt that the sustainability agenda was becoming mainstream. And so it has proved. Each year, the ISSP conference has been gathering energy, breadth and depth. People from all over the world get together to share views, exchange ideas, and learn from each other and some of the best and most acclaimed speakers in our profession.

You are strongly encouraged to join us in Denver next month for the third ISSP conference. It is the best opportunity to get those essential broader perspectives and up-to-the-moment knowledge and insights that will prove so valuable in your sustainability work. Take advantage of one of the pre-conference workshops to broaden your professional expertise. Come and chat with some of the living legends of sustainability, our ISSP Hall of Fame honorees.

I look forward to sharing the excitement and learnings with you.

Julian Crawford

ISSP AROUND THE WORLD

ISSP Co-Sponsors Meeting of Academic Sustainability Professionals in New Zealand

In September, ISSP co-sponsored a forum for sustainable practices in New Zealand. The aim of the forum was to enhance and extend the community of practice around sustainability in the tertiary education sector in New Zealand, which which covers private training establishments (PTEs), institutes of technology and polytechnic schools (ITPs), universities, and workplace training. The community is made up of professional staff members responsible for facilitating sustainability and environmental performance improvement in their universities or technical institutes.

"We have a core group of about 15 people who already meet monthly via desktop conferencing, but we felt we would get an additional boost from an intensive session to which we could also invite other staff members who have significant, associated roles. We wanted to encourage them to contribute to our discussions and to recognize that they are an important part of what we achieve collectively," says the Manager of Sustainability and Environment at the University of Auckland, Dr. Lesley Stone.

ISSP In Your Home Town

Have you ever wished for new ways to connect with sustainability professionals in your community? Since sustainability is still a relatively new profession, ISSP seeks to bring definition, credibility and attention to the field and to serve as "the voice" of sustainability professionals around the world.

In addition to ISSP's annual conference and many web-based resources, members are encouraged to advance our mutual goal of achieving sustainability through more localized chapter meetings, each specializing in the problems and solutions of our communities.

In this spirit, we are proud to announce two new regional meetings: Western Canada and New York City.

The Western Canada networking session will be held online on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 10:30am PDT to allow sustainability professionals to network and talk about any and all issues relating to implementing sustainability practices in the region and to gauge interest for regular meetings.

The New York City local chapter meeting will be held at the Midtown East home of ISSP member Mark D. Wolf at 2:30pm EST Sunday, Oct. 5 to discuss expectations for an ISSP NYC chapter, including coverage of topics not being met by other professional societies.

So, if you're a sustainability professional - and a current or prospective ISSP member - in Alberta, British Columbia, or New York, be sure to show up and share your vision with your peers.
