ISSP Conference 2014 Complements Online Information

The introduction to this month's newsletter is written jointly by ISSP President Julian Crawford, from Sydney, Australia, and the Co-Chairs of the ISSP Conference 2014 Organizing Committee, ISSP Directors KJ McCorry and Graham Russell from Colorado, USA.

Dear Fellow ISSP Members,

In recent months, ISSP has been working hard to progressively increase the flow of useful information to our members. With our email newsletters and updates, LinkedIn group discussions and Twitter feed, we now reach many thousands of sustainability professionals around the world.

Julian Crawford

For example, both the Sustainability Professionals and Environmental Sustainability Professionals LinkedIn groups were started by people who have served as ISSP Directors (Stephan Levitsky and Scott Bennett). Together with ISSP's own LinkedIn group, these three groups now have over 100,000 members. So, we're certainly adding our collective voices to the sustainability dialogues taking place in cyber space, with sustainability professionals worldwide contributing their perspectives.

However, as we all know, nothing really beats genuine

KJ McCorry

face-to-face contact for getting to know someone and understand their ideas and perspectives. That's why ISSP invests considerable energy in organizing and promoting its superb conferences. The first was in Portland, the second last year in Chicago, and the third is coming up in Denver. I know from personal experience that they are getting bigger, better and more valuable every year.

An outstanding group of world renowned and regional experts will present on a variety of topics covering the hottest sustainability

Graham Russell

issues at ISSP Conference 2014, November 12-14. Join sustainability champions from all over the world to network, learn and help shape the profession. The conference is designed to be a rich learning experience specially designed to build the skills, knowledge, and connections necessary to accelerate the adoption of sustainability in organizations and communities around the globe. We recommend that you look at the program and book your place now to take advantage of the very attractive early bird prices.

We look forward to meeting you in person.

Julian Crawford, KJ McCorry and Graham Russell

NEWS FROM THE ISSP BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Marilyn Johnson Honored with IHS Leadership Award

ISSP Vice President Marilyn Johnson was recently honored for her work in advancing sustainability and corporate social responsibility by her employer IHS, a global research and information analysis company with more than 8,000 employees in 31 different countries.

Marilyn Johnson

Every year, top performers are recognized within the company by the IHS Leadership Team for outstanding performance. Top employees a

are treated to a week-long retreat, and this year 200 of them and their families were given the chance to soak up the sun and enjoy Cayman's beautiful beaches. What made the trip unique is that while they were all in Cayman, the IHS group shared approximately 2000 hours of volunteer time, helping the community of Grand Cayman in a number of sustainability activities.

The IHS vacationers were divided into seven groups, each with a major project to focus on. These projects included a makeover for a Little League baseball field, supporting Meals on Wheels, making bicycles, cleaning up a beach, planting mangroves, repainting a skate park and helping restore a botanical garden.

As Director of Corporate Sustainability at IHS, Marilyn leads a number of initiatives as the firm works to truly create a culture of sustainability. Being listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index two years in advance of their goal, exceeding 10,000 hours of community volunteering in 2013 with nearly 16,000 hours, and issuing its inaugural Corporate Sustainability Report (which received a PRNews Honorable Mention award for First Time Report) were highlights of the progress and achievement in Sustainability for which Marilyn was recognized.

Congratulations to Marilyn and her colleagues at IHS!

Marsha Willard to Highlight
S-CORE in Panel Discussion

ISSP Founder, Current ISSP Secretary and Executive Director Emeritus Marsha Willard will be moderating a panel discussion about sustainability tools at the GoGreen Conference in Portland, Oregon on October 16.

Entitled Tools to Increase Internal Sustainability and Loyalty through Employee Engagement, the panel will address the how the link between employee engagement and sustainability has become increasingly important in improving business sustain

ability. Panelists will tackle this issue head on by sharing tools and strategies that teach employees to understand how their jobs impact their company's sustainability initiatives.

As part of the discussion, Marsha plans to detail the use and momentum behind S-CORE, (Sustainability--Competency, Opportunity, Reporting & Evaluation) the multi-purpose sustainability assessment tool that speeds up the implementation of organizational sustainable practices. Originally developed by AXIS Performance Advisors in collaboration with the International Sustainable Development Foundation and the Zero Waste Alliance, the web-based version of S-CORE was created by Sustainable Measures, LLC to allow easier access by a wider audience of users.

Earlier this year, AXIS and Sustainable Measures turned ownership of S-CORE over to ISSP in order to put the tool into the public domain and accelerate the implementation of sustainable best practices.
