Member Involvement A Key Ingredient to Future ISSP Plans

These are exciting times for the sustainability movement generally and ISSP particularly. The ISSP Board elects a new Leadership Team each July. To recognize the change-over, the introduction to this month's newsletter is written jointly by ISSP President Julian Crawford, from Sydney, Australia and Vice President Marilyn Johnson based in Seattle, WA.

Dear Fellow ISSP Members,

You may have seen the recent press release announcing our great cross section of new Board members.  They're all inspirational leaders in their chosen fields. We also elected our new ISSP Leadership Team, a sub-group of the full Board and responsible for much of the day-to-day strategic oversight of our broadening and exciting range of activities.

At ISSP, the membership IS the organization and our reason for being. So it is important that ISSP continues to grow our membership to ensure global mass to establishing ourselves as the 'go-to' organization for sustainability professionals around the world. This means delivering value to members and having an engaged, active member base.

Marilyn Johnson

There's so much happening now, such as S-CORE (our multi-purpose sustainability assessment tool), progressing our certification plans, the ongoing education and webinar program and the November Conference in Denver. Members of the Leadership Team are working closely with other Board members to further development and enhance our Committee structure. The four main committees and the primary focus of each are:

1. Membership and Local Chapters ("Enhancing membership value")

2. Education and Professional Development ("Go-to organization for Sustainability Education and Certification")

3. Resources and Research ("Leading Edge Thinking & Resources for Sustainability Professionals")

4. Partnerships and Policy ("Globally Leading, Umbrella Sustainability Organization")

In the weeks ahead, we plan to bring you more details on each Committee's agenda and work programs and encourage you, our members, to contribute and add your insights and experience. If you're interested in participating in or forming a local chapter then please let us know.

Finally, we have an exciting program planned for ISSP Conference 2014 in Denver in November. Take a look at what's coming up on our detailed program now up on the website. We look forward to meeting you in person there.

ISSP MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Get To Know Sogen Moodley

from Durbin, South Africa

This is the latest installment in an occasional series of ISSP Member Profiles. Do you have an interesting background or career story that you'd like to share with other members of the ISSP community? Drop us a line at [email protected].

Please tell us about your role and responsibilities at MILE.

Sogen Moodley

I am the Senior Manager of the Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE) at the eThekwini Municipality in Durban, South Africa, a position I've held for 5 years. The focus of our institute is city-to-city learning, services that we provide for free. This involves positioning Durban as an international centre of learning. We have a staff of 12 in the MILE office. I oversee the programs and make sure they are on track.

What is your greatest sustainability challenge at the moment?

In Africa, it is a challenge to put sustainability firmly on the radar screen. While much of the world is focused on climate change, in Africa, we are concerned with health - particularly HIV, safety and security, poverty, and service delivery. It is very hard to look at the long term when short term needs are so critical.

BOOK REVIEW
Six Sigma for Sustainability: How Organizations Design and Deploy Winning Environmental Programs

By Thomas McCarty, Michael Jordan and Daniel Probst

New York, NY, McGraw-Hill, 2011

Reviewed by Sean Hanna, Production and Engineering Management Group, Portland, OR

As a business strategy, Six Sigma is out of fashion. It has come under fire for not providing sufficient return on the significant investment, focusing on extreme quality targets, stifling innovation and obsessing on statistics while missing the big picture. So, it's interesting to see McCarty, Jordan and Probst address how Six Sigma can be an excellent execution engine for sustainability excellence.

The reality is that Six Sigma is still relevant to business success but, as the authors report, it is not a metric or a methodology. Rather, it's a management system, and the main reason why many have failed in their six sigma implementations is that the projects selected were not integrated with the key business objectives and strategies. Being employees of the real estate company Jones Lang LaSalle, the authors highlight the JLL systems and the use of resident catchphrases such as "collaborative management model" and "sustainability transfer function" are a little distracting, but not enough to detract from the overall argument that the existing structures of lean and six sigma are, virtually, plug-and-play for executing and driving a corporate sustainability program.
