FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Help Us Move the Work of ISSP Forward: Get Involved!
These are exciting times for the sustainability movement generally and ISSP particularly. The ISSP Board elects a new President each July. To recognize the change-over, the introduction to this month's newsletter is written jointly by outgoing ISSP President Dorothy Atwood in Portland, Oregon, and incoming ISSP President Julian Crawford, based in Sydney, Australia.
On one hand, it seems that almost every day brings

news of fresh evidence of environmental decline and challenges. From declining air quality in cities, through debates about pricing carbon to extreme weather events around the world, we're buffeted on all sides by doom and gloom.
However, at ISSP, we're 'glass half full' optimistic people! We feel that our efforts are part of the solution to the challenges, and that by learning, understanding and working together we can and will make a difference.

issues analysis, and developing new markets. I also decided to write a book for engineers on sustainability called Becoming Part of the Solution: The Engineer's Guide to Sustainable Development. When it was published in 2005, the book didn't sell like, say, Harry Potter. However, it became relatively popular with engineering design firms. At that point, I shifted my work focus toward sustainability.
Now I consult with public and private sector organizations on various aspects of sustainable engineering. My most recent project was for the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, and involved the creation of Envision™, a sustainability rating system for infrastructure. Today, we have trained and accredited over 2000 people. So far, three projects, with a constructed value of over $100 million, have been given Envision™ awards. Many more projects are in our awards "pipeline." For my work on Envision, Engineering News-Record magazine recognized me as a Top 25 Newsmaker for 2013. The American Society of Civil Engineers also nominated me for the U.S. National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

Values in Sustainable Development
Edited By Jack Appleton
New York NY. Routledge, 2014
Reviewed by Gigi Burke, Ph.D.
This book brings together scholars from various disciplines to discuss the critical, and at times, overlooked aspect of sustainability, our values. It is organized in three key sections edited by Jack Appleton. The chapters are brief and engaging. It invites us to examine human nature from an individual and a collective perspective, and its impact on identifying and implementing sustainable solutions.
Part One looks at the different methods for understanding how our values are formed, which sets the foundation for subsequent examination of core issues in sustainable development such as engagement, implementation, and conflict. The chapters in this section discuss the importance of values, how values are constructed, and how to utilize them to inspire, motivate and engage people in developing and implementing sustainable solutions. It also touches on topics such as psychometrics and discourse analysis, which may seem irrelevant, but offer significant insights into understanding our values and attitudes towards the environment. A look at the importance of understanding, analyzing, and effectively managing transitions, both natural and planned, concludes Part One of this book.
