Newest Members of
ISSP Hall of Fame to Be
Honored At Denver Conference

ISSP has announced the latest set of leaders in the sustainability profession who will join the ISSP Sustainability Hall of FameTM. The four new honorees will be inducted during a ceremony at ISSP Conference 2014, to be held November 12-14 in Denver, Colorado.

As in past years, names of nominees were submitted by ISSP members and, after thorough review, the current class was selected by the ISSP Board of Directors. They are:

Susan Burns, CEO of Global Footprint Network. Over the last decade Susan has built Global Footprint Network into one of the leading and most respected scientific organizations in the world addressing global ecological limits.

Jeffrey Hollender, Founder and CEO of Hollender Sustainable Brands. Hollender Sustainable Brands has developed and markets Sustain condoms, the first US brand of condoms that is certified to be fair trade, free of chemicals of concern and sustainably produced.

Joel Makower, Chairman and Executive Editor of GreenBiz Group Inc. Joel is an award-winning author and a leading voice on the intersection of sustainable business, clean technology and innovation.

Mathis Wackernagel, Co-Creator of the Ecological Footprint and President of Global Footprint Network, an int

ernational sustainability think-tank. Global Footprint Network focuses on bringing about a sustainable human economy in which all can live well within the means of one planet.

These four sustainability leaders will join the current members of the ISSP Sustainability Hall of Fame who were installed during ISSP's inaugural conference in Portland, Oregon in September 2011, and at ISSP Conference 2013, held last May in Chicago.

CERTIFICATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY PROS?

Early Survey Results Indicate Broad Support for Certification

As was reported in last month's issue of this newsletter, ISSP has been exploring the need for a professional certification to accredit practitioners within the field. The exploration has been prompted by interest from members, a desire within the profession for greater definition of the field, the emergence of varying "certificates" or "certifications" being offered up by private sector organizations and the growing number of people entering the field with a diversity of training and experience.

By 'certified professional', we mean someone who has been tested and certified as having a comprehensive, working knowledge of the relevant issues and challenges associated with being a sustainability practitioner.

ISSP recently fielded an industry survey as part of its research to determine the need and market for a certification.

Early results indicate broad support for a professional certification for sustainability practitioners. Of 805 people who took the survey to date, 68.8 % of respondents answered 'yes' to the question "If a professional certification were available, would you seek to become certified?"

A majority of respondents think that some level of hands-on expertise in the field should be a prerequisite for a professional certification. 37.6% of respondents indicated that at least 2-4 years experience would be appropriate, while another 33.7% thought sustainability practitioners should possess more than 4 years of experience before qualifying for certification.

BOOK REVIEW
The Sixth Extinction

By Elizabeth Kolbert

Henry Holt & Co., New York NY 2014

Reviewed by Faye Sinnott, President of

Solution Navigators, Inc. and ISSP Member

Elizabeth Kolbert is a talented journalist, and like all good journalists she has meticulously researched her topic, and woven a fascinating story.

In her prologue, Kolbert notes that no creature has ever altered life on the planet the way humans have. The Earth has undergone big changes before, changes so catastrophic they caused the diversity of life to plummet. Five big extinctions have occurred in the past, and as we are coming to an understanding of those events, we may also realize that we are causing another one.

Kolbert organizes her book by looking at a specie that is emblematic in some way. While beginning with the contemporary issue of threatened Panamanian golden frogs, most of the early chapters address species that are already gone. Plunging into a history of science, Kolbert figures that extinction emerged as a concept in revolutionary France around 1705, and the American Mastodon fossils found near Big Bone Lick, Kentucky, were the reason.
