Growth of ISSP Showcased In 2012-2013 Annual Report

The 2012-2013 ISSP Annual Report has just been published. It's full of facts and figures that highlight the recent accomplishments of the group, and frames our goals for the year ahead. Here's what ISSP Executive Director Marsha Willard has to say in the Report's introductory letter to readers.

Marsha Willard 2013
Marsha Willard

This will be my last Annual Report for ISSP. The organization is entering a new chapter in its development as am I. As I write this, the search committee from the ISSP board of directors is conducting an international search for a new Executive Director to take the organization into its next phase of evolution. I'm excited for where the organization is going and its potential for growth and impact. It's been a privilege to have been here from the beginning and to have worked with so many stellar professionals to get this organization launched.

The next couple of years should prove dramatic for the organization. We are expanding membership through the creation of local chapters. We also plan to increase our on-the-ground presence with face-to-face training workshops. And we continue our effort toward professional certification. It's a great time to be a professional in this field and ISSP hopes to be the primary source of development for all those working in it. I plan to maintain my membership in ISSP and hope you do too!

MEMBER INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Update: ISSP and Bethesda Green
The MD/VA/DC
Local Chapter Event

October 2013 saw another ISSP Local Chapter initiative bloom into action in the Washington,
DC, Maryland and Virginia region. An ISSP sponsored open house event drew interest and ISSP members from all three regions. The event took place at the offices of Bethesda Green in Bethesda, Maryland October 10.

A huge shout out and a thank you to both Dave Feldman and Sumi Shrestha at Bethesda Green for their continued support!

As a result of that gathering a couple of local members have stepped up to collaborate on creating chapter activities. If you are in that region and are an ISSP member, OR even if not, you are welcome to contact us here and we'll be in touch. Go MD/VA/DC!

Has this piqued your interest? Want learn more about  how to launch a local chapter in your area? Join Marsha Willard and the ISSP team for a webinar December 5 to learn more. Read about the December 5 Webinar below and register for it here.

BOOK REVIEW
Nature's Wealth - The Economics of Ecosystem Services and Poverty

Edited by Pieter J.H. van Beukering, Elissaios Papyrakis, Jetske Bouma and Roy Brouwer.

Cambridge, England. Cambridge University Press 2013

Reviewed by Carol Slaughterbeck, PE, PMP, Executive Vice President of Herrera Environmental Consultants

"As a consequence of human actions, species are being lost at a rate estimated to be 100 times the natural rate of extinction...action is urgently needed to avoid...irreversible loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services..."  UN (2010).

With these opening words, "Nature's Wealth" brings an academic level summary of the latest case studies in sustainable management of ecosystem services for human and ecosystem well-being.  It pays special attention to innovative management opportunities that improved local livelihoods and alleviated poverty while enhancing ecosystem protection.

The book is organized around five types of ecosystem services, and will appeal primarily to academics specifically interested in one of the following areas : biodiversity related ecosystem services, marine related ecosystem services, forest related ecosystem services, water related ecosystem services, and land related ecosystem services.  Case studies span the globe from Nepal to Zambia to the Philippines.  Each section includes a summary of key findings from the studies related to each section.

FEATURING PRESENTERS FROM
THE WORLDWATCH INSTITUTE

ISSP's NOVEMBER WEBINAR

State of the World 2013:
Is Sustainability Still Possible?

Robert Engelman

The word "sustainable" is increasingly difficult to distinguish between "sustainababble," with increasing false claims confusing our understanding of what sustainability truly entails.

This webinar, based on the 2013 edition of Worldwatch Institute's flagship annual, State of the World (subtitled: Is Sustainability Still Possible?), will help participants to better distinguish between sustainability and sustainababble, discuss the scientific foundations of sustainability,
Erik Assadourian
and explore how to create a truly sustainable human society, and if that is no longer possible, how to prepare ourselves for the turbulent transition ahead.

Presenters will be Robert Engleman, president of Worldwatch Institute, and Erik Assadourian, senior fellow of Worldwatch. Worldwatch Institute is an independent research organization based in Washington, D.C. that works on energy, resource, and environmental issues.

The key question Robert and Eric will explore is how

sustainability can be shown to have a scientific foundation. And if so, what do theory and current data say about the sustainability of our global civilization?
