ISSP INSIGHT E-JOURNAL ARTICLE
Take Ten Outside: Bridging the Gap Between the Office and Nature
By Lisa Bernsten, Ph.D.
The sun on your face, a breeze blowing across your skin, your lungs full of fresh air. Who doesn't feel better in this environment? Well it turns out that you not only feel better, but it makes you more productive and healthier too. And all it takes is 10 minutes! The research on which this article is based studied the productivity and personal well-being of office workers by asking the following question:
-
What would happen if the Natural Systems Thinking Process (NSTP) philosophy were brought into the workplace? And,
-
Would short segments of time spent out-of-doors, in nature, during the work day have a positive impact on the lives of the employees?
The findings point to mental and physical health benefits for adults resulting from spending quality time in nature. The research also indicates that accuracy (proofreading, for example) is greater after spending time in a natural setting. To access the full article, click here.

Planning An Event?
New ISO Standard Can Help Keep It Green
Conferences, concerts, sporting events, exhibitions and festivals can offer a wide range of public, local community and economic benefits. However staging an event can also generate negative economic, environmental and social impacts, such as material waste, energy consumption and strains on local communities.
Last summer, ISO published a new standard to support organizers of events of all types - sporting, business, cultural, political - in integrating sustainability with their activities.
ISO 20121:2012, Event Sustainability Management Systems - Requirements with Guidance for Use is suitable for ensuring that events, ranging from local celebrations to "mega events" such as the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, leave behind a positive legacy. The standard is relevant to all members of the event industry supply chain including organizers, event managers, exhibit builders, caterers and logistics suppliers.
Want some help in applying the new standard to your event? Green Shoot Pacific has written a plain-language guide to how the standard can be applied to the planning and delivery of your next event. Green Shoot Pacific will also be teaching an ISSP on-line Sustainable Event Training workshop that begins this September. See more info about the workshop below .

SEPTEMBER 2013 WEBINAR
Branding Redefined: How Sustainability is Changing the Way We Do Business
with James Cerruti, Senior Partner of
Strategy and Research - Brandlogic
Thursday September 19 @ 11:00am Pacific Time-US
11am PDT/ 12pm MDT/ 1pm CDT/ 2pm EDT
Check for your time zone HERE
James' presentation will focus on the research and data featured in Brandlogic's 2012 Sustainability Leadership Report.Specifically, he will speak about the intersection between branding and sustainability and how companies are being perceived in this realm. Any company's ultimate brand power and success is correlated to how it can communicate its sustainability efforts. He will report on the characteristics that define the leaders, challengers, promoters and laggards in this area. He'll also discuss the important nuances and trends related to the multifaceted "ESG" (environmental issues, social issues and governance practices) of business sustainability. Join us to learn:
- How can sustainability transform a brand's image and boost business?
- What if companies are not actively pursuing sustainability practices?
James will discuss the consequences of inaction. It's clear that this research is opening new doors and broadening our definition of sustainability. He will report on how this research effort came about and the impetus behind making this report an annual publication.
Now in its second year, Brandlogic's Sustainability Leadership Report is championing a new research effort, looking at top global brands and examining how those businesses are faring in terms of real versus perceived sustainability. This project, which involves input from investment professionals, purchasing managers and graduating university students, looks at corporate performance from an environmental, social and governance angle. The results of this year's report are uniquely tabulated in a Sustainability IQ matrix, which is quickly becoming a meaningful framework for organizations as they strive to achieve sustainability leadership.
PRESENTER
James Cerruti is Senior Partner of Strategy and Research - Brandlogic. His expertise lies in explaining how sustainability is integral to business strategy, brand and customer value propositions. He is the author behind the Sustainability Leadership Report and his inspiring ideas are supported by meaningful qualitative and comparative data that analyze the world's top global brands.
