Bob Willard: Leading the Change to a Sustainability Culture, from the Middle

An expert on leadership, culture change, and organizational development, Bob distills lessons learned about cultural transformation that are described in his book, The Sustainability Champion's Guidebook. He provides practical guidance on how to embed sustainability into corporate culture, even if you are not the CEO. He outlines a seven-step sustainability change process, including how to frame the business case for the culture change; seven leadership practices to use throughout the change process; seven paradoxes that enable successful change strategies; and seven derailers to avoid. By connecting the dots between timeless leadership practices and sustainability strategies, Bob shows how sustainability champions at any level in a company can lead a transformation to a smarter and more sustainable enterprise that will thrive in the new economy.

Jennifer Woofter On How To Thrive in Today's Rapidly Changing Consulting Industry

Six-month intensive program offered by the International Society of Society Professionals and led by consulting veteran Jennifer Woofter is designed to help sustainability consultants launch new practices and take existing businesses to next level.

The following article is a summary of Jennifer Woofter's Q & A on the Consultants Cohort Program as recorded March 5, 2013.

"The Sustainability Consulting industry is rapidly changing and challenging industry.  What worked 10 years ago doesn't always work now. Especially over the last 2 to 3 years we have se

seen a consolidation of the sustainability consulting industry. A lot of the big consulting firms went on a buying spree and bought up a

lot of the boutique sustainability consulting companies.  This left a bifurcation of the industry with some really big consultancies (Deloitte and KPMG) and some of the really small ones, 10 and under.  Most of the sustainability consulting companies are two people or less.  And a lot of people are out there as 'solopreneurers'.

The ISSP Consultants Cohort Program is really designed for the 'new' sustainability consultant who is thinking of launching their own practice. Or for the boutique, very small sustainability consulting company, that struggle to find their place in the market or are trying to understand how to take their business to the next level.  Over the course of the 6 month Consultants Cohort Program we will be going over all the aspects that go into running a successful sustainability company."  Read more HERE

Sustainability Accounting Standards Board:

Establishing Standards for Formal Accounting
of Sustainability Impacts
Thanks to broadly accepted standards for financial reporting, investors are able to intelligently compare the performance of publicly traded businesses and make informed investment decisions. Investors have come to recognize, however, that decisions regarding how an organization manages its finances are important but insufficient to assess its risk and vulnerability. We live in a different world now, one that has greater uncertainty, a broader range of risks and opportunities, and significant resource constraints beyond access to and management of capital.

For this reason a new, standardized language is needed to help investors assess the material, non-financial risks and opportunities facing companies today. These standards are what we need to help us formally recognize and account for an organization's environmental and social impacts.

Pre-conference workshop about SASB
SASB's efforts will have huge impacts on all organizations as these standards become widely adopted and perhaps even legislated. ISSP is pleased to include a workshop on this project as part of our
pre-conference events in May in Chicago.

Management systems are the key to ongoing progress. A SMS (sustainability management system) allows for systematic internal review, monitoring and corrective actions for continual improvement.

You will learn what level of sophistication works best for you and what elements to add as your system matures. You will complete the workshop having learned practical methods to solidify and advance sustainability efforts by applying proven management system tools, practices and competencies:

  • Build and maintain sustainability management systems
  • Develop sustainability metrics
  • Create/maintain sustainability reporting
  • Describe continuous improvement (CIP): - Kaizen, ISO 14000, Lean Six Sigma, TQM, etc.

APRIL WEBINAR
Storytelling for Sustainability
with Dr. Jeff Leinaweaver
  • April 26, 2013 at 11am Pacific Time
  • 2pm Eastern Time-USA for 60 minutes
  • Not located in US/Pacific time zone?
  • See what time it is in your local time zone.

In the worlds of strategic sustainability and corporate social responsibility, more and more attention is being focused on the importance of storytelling as a key component in one's toolkit for change.  Yet, despite the growth of storytelling as a methodology for change, people, communities and business often struggle to have their stories heard, understood and re-told above the noise.

In this presentation session, participants will learn why it's not always about telling stories that matter, but how stories are told within an ecology of narratives and mystery. Participants will learn how storytelling shows up as a systems dynamic and why cultivating their storytelling practice can become an X-Factor in their sustainability efforts.

The presentation will answer the following questions:
  • What makes a good story?
  • What makes a story believable?
  • How can stories result in positive change?
  • How can I tell the kind of stories that get retold?
  • Why is storytelling an X-factor in my sustainability work?

PRESENTER

Dr. Jeff Leinaweaver is a storyteller, eco-psychologist, teacher and change practitioner within the fields of strategic global sustainability, green leadership development, corporate social responsibility, organizational development and Permaculture design. Jeff is founder and principal of Global Zen Sustainability, a strategic sustainability consultancy. He is also the executive producer and radio host for Gaialogue Radio.

Jeff has also been engaged in a number of collaborative partnerships including with The Natural Step USA, The Center for Ethical Leadership, and as a GRI-certified trainer for the ISOS Group.
