ISSP E-JOURNAL ARTICLE:
Top Tools for Sustainability Consultants:
Getting ROI from Professional Associations

Early this year, the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) collaborated with New York City-based research, advisory and consulting firm Green Research on its 2012 survey of 1,548 sustainability consultants from around the world. The following article by Linda Lovett is the fourth and final in a series that ISSP is publishing to provide further insights from the survey data and other research.

Linda's final article focuses on the various associations that consultants look to for leadership and training in the sustainability space.

Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned practitioner, joining a professional association can be a good way to further your career or business. Although there are numerous ways to build or maintain knowledge of your desired field-networking, trade and industry journals, etc.- joining a professional association is a great way to draw on all of those resources.

Among the advantages to joining a professional association, human resource experts and career advisers often cite:

  1. Professional Development

  2. Networking
  3. Career Resources
  4. Advocacy

Despite these benefits, the Green Research/ISSP survey suggests many sustainability practitioners either are not joining professional organizations or don't find their memberships useful.

BOOK REVIEW:
Design for Environment: A Guide to Sustainable Product Development

Fiksel, Joseph 2009. Design for Environment, Second Edition:

A Guide to Sustainable Product Development: Eco-Efficient

Product Development. McGraw-Hill Professional New York.

Review prepared by Clifford Bast, Managing Director, Bast SUISTAINGROUP LLC, and member of ISSP Board of Directors

Joseph Fiksel has made another outstanding personal contribution to advancing Sustainability in business and NGO organizations with his latest book:"Design for Environment, Second Edition: A Guide to Sustainable Product Development: Eco-Efficient Product Development".

I've known Joseph for more than twenty years beginning when my team and I were developing Hewlett-Packard's pioneering Global DFE/Product Stewardship program and I truly appreciate Joseph's continued personal passion for Design for the Environment (DFE). His latest book is a great manifestation of that passion as he weaves together a very practical guide with excellent examples of value-adding applications of DFE among many iconic corporate and NGO leaders in multiple sectors.

I think Chapter 4 on "Business Value Drivers" and Chapter 7 on "Performance Indicators and Metrics" are especially valuable because they offer great insights into: a) how to motivate management involvement and support for DFE and b) how to integrate DFE into core business processes, which in my view is a critical success factor for any credible corporate sustainability program.

This book is a "must read" book for any EHS/DFE/Sustainability practitioner wanting to advance sustainability in their organization. And I trust I can assume that, like me, those practitioners that have a long history with DFE and Sustainability appreciate Joseph's continued outstanding work and contributions to our profession.
