Trends in

Kitchens, 2011

An interview with Partner,

McKee Patterson, AIA

What about the program of the kitchen, its layout?

People still want it to be connected to the breakfast room and family room, but now clients are more realistic about what a kitchen is for: a work space, storage and food pantries. Gone is the 38 foot kitchen with miles of cabinets.

What's new in the kitchens you design recently?

The biggest convenience is the shift from cupboards with shelving to large pullout drawers that accommodate large pots, pans, plates, and items that used to be hard to reach if placed in the back of the cupboard. Now, large sturdy drawers make it easy and quicker (one less motion) to access.

the Alice Washburn Award for new traditional building.

The Jury's Comments:

"The manor-like Westport residence exhibits a picturesque play of forms and materials; its scale of fenestration and oversized gutters helps to reduce the scale of a large house. The overall asymmetrical massing of elements is balanced and comfortable."

Firmly anchored among the dunes on Long Island's South Shore - with the Atlantic to one side, the bay to the other - is the land lover's equivalent of a luxury liner. At least that's how Partner, Stuart Disston, AIA, envisioned it when a New York couple asked Stuart to transform their beach house from the 1980s wood-clad beach house they purchased into an ultra modern, über fun gathering place.

What about flooring?
Our consistent favorite for kitchen flooring is wood; it looks great, is easy to stand on for long periods, it is still the most economical, and has many different treatments from bleached to dark carbonized wood. We use an oil finish in contrast to urethane which is easy to clean and refurbish and it doesn't show wear patterns.
