Great American Can Roundup School Recycling Challenge
November 15, 2013 - April 22, 2014

The Great American Can Roundup

How many aluminum beverage cans can your school recycle per student between America Recycles Day (November 15), 2013 and Earth Day (April 22), 2014?

Each week, residents make a conscious effort at the "point of pitch" to recycle all types of paper; glass jars and bottles; plastic bottles and containers; steel cans; and aluminum beverage cans.  These items are placed in a designated cart or bin and picked-up at the curb or alley.  Once recyclable materials are collected from the curbside, they are taken to a Materials Recycling Facility or MRF to be sorted and baled.  Then the materials will be reprocessed - chipped-up and melted down to make new products.  By recycling, resources are conserved and landfills do not fill up so quickly.

In addition to recycling aluminum cans at home, students have an opportunity to participate in the Can Manufacturers Institute's (CMI) Great American Can Roundup School Recycling Challenge.

CMI is the national trade association of can manufacturers and is offering $1,000 to the school in each state and the District of Columbia that recycles the most aluminum cans per student enrollment.  The school that emerges as the champion recycling school receives an additional $5,000.  Registration is required by December 15 and is now open at cancentral.com/RoundUp

At cancentral.com/RoundUp, program coordinators will find everything needed to build recycling enthusiasm and rally the community for the win.  Environmental educators will also find grade-appropriate, free interdisciplinary curricula and worksheets for the classroom to continue the discussion of the positive impact on the environment through aluminum can recycling.  During the competition, schools are able to monitor their school's recycling progress.

It is easy as 1) Register; 2) Record Pounds Recycled; 3) Submit Verification.
