SAVE Club Members at Loyola Academy Customize Reycling Bins
 Colorful Containers Promote Recycling

Julie Nold, Spanish Teacher and SAVE club moderator (Students Against Violating the Earth) at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, utilized SWANCC Waste Grant funds to purchase plain large barrels to be used for recycling in the school's cafeteria.  Why plain?  Because the students in the SAVE club volunteered to paint them.

The process included sanding, priming, using acrylic paints and then applying a sealer.  Once dried, stickers from the AmericaRecycles website were put on the lid to communicate what materials to put inside - paper/glass/plastic.  The bins are located in the cafeteria next to regular garbage containers.  A total of eight barrels were painted.

Ms. Nold reports that the response has been positive-- students find them attractive and interesting and are therefore encouraged to use them.
