Director's Update

Judy Newman
Museum Director |
We have so much happening around the museum, you really must stop by again soon to see what is new and changing.
WAAAM is excited to announce that we have a new member of the board, Jerry Wenger of Powell WY.
"Jerry has extensive experience in business, aviation and corporate governance. He will be a wonderful asset to WAAAM as a board member."
Pictured with the Moswey III sail-plane now on display are WAAAM Board of Directors.
From the left: Will Carey, Warren Bean, Don Mayo, Bill Bremmeyer, Bryan Reid, Terry Brandt, John Benton, Jerry Wenger
Three beautiful antique WACO Bi-planes have been donated! The 1932 UBF and the 1935 YPF (with over 9000 hours into the
restoration) arrived at WAAAM over the Memorial Day weekend and the third, a ATO will be in on June's Second Saturday baring weather and volunteer pilot timing. I know this is not much information, however we will be gathering the story tidbits for you and fill you in the July newsletter.
The Paul Mantz Curtiss Pusher restoration project is on its way to the Pearson Air Museum in Vancouver, WA where it will be on display for the summer months. This craft flew off the Embassy Suites Hotel Roof in downtown Portland in 1996 piloted by our very own daredevil (Director of Aircraft Restoration) Tom Murphy. We are helping to celebrate 100 years of Rose Festival traditions.
The Skeets Family has put on loan a 1942 SNJ5. What is that you ask? Stop by to see this built for the Military Trainer/Reno Air Race Champion.
The aircraft of WAAAM have flown throughout the Gorge quite often this May and have received many notes, call and comments of thanks as they preformed a number of Fly-Bys all for different reasons.

We helped open the new addition of the Maryhill Museum with a flight of five, and the L Birds flew twice for the coming home procession and internment ceremony for WWII Paratrooper PFC Kights whose remains were laid to their final rest in hometown of White salmon, WA after being listed as MIA for 67 years. The procession down the Gorge on that Friday was very emotional for volunteer and serving Army pilot Ben Davidson who is back from a deployment to Afghanistan. "Hundreds of bikes and flags flew for this man and I was proud to do my part in honoring a fellow soldier. Emotional... very emotional" said Davidson. A visitor to WAAAM told one museum volunteer, "The Missing Man formation was very touching and there was not a person there who was not moved by what they saw, bringing home the reason they were at the service". Our final flight of the month was in honor of Memorial Day as three Vintage WWII L-Birds flew over the hundreds that gathered at the Idlewilde Cemetery in Hood River. Many thanks to our volunteer pilots Jeremy Young, Lee Borchers, Bill Avolio, Scott Gifford, Terry Brandt, Addison Pemberton, Dick Pengrey, Brian Brandt, Ben Davidson and the crew that helps them launch.
Model T Ambulance and the Model A: Projects moving ahead.
Second Saturdays continue to be a great success.
June 9th is a Second Saturday full of action.
Thank you to all who believe in the spirit of WAAAM and for your donations and support.
Clear skies to you all,
Judy Newman
