Even the wind storm didn't shut down MAB's GLBC 2017! Of all the past Great Lakes Broadcasting Conferences, this one was the absolute best.  More than 850 Individuals attended GLBC this year, held March 7 & 8 at the Lansing Center.

Michigan Engineers Honored at GLBC



The Carl E. Lee Broadcast Engineering Excellence Awards were presented during the main luncheon at the MAB's annual Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference.



Radio Recipient: Craig Bowman, Owner of Bowman Engineering Company/Partner in the Synergy Broadcasting Group.  Television Recipient: David Oliver, Engineering Supervisor for WGVU Public Media in Grand Rapids, and Chief Operator for WGVS-AM and FM. Read more here...




MAB/MABF Announce the BEA Station of the Year Recipients



The Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) and MAB Foundation (MABF) are proud to announce the recipients of 2016 Broadcast Excellence Awards (BEA) Stations of the Year Awards.

State of Michigan Legislative Update



MAB Holds Legislative Reception




The MAB held its annual Legislative Reception
on March 8 during the 2017 Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference in Lansing. Close to 30 lawmakers attended the event to meet and visit with their local broadcasters and discuss issues affecting our industry. More photos here...





Appeals an Issue Under Legislative Open Records Act



Under new legislation, which opens some legislative records, a court would not handle the appeals of refused documents as it is done under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Instead, a bipartisan board appointed by the House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader would have the final say on any appeal.

Federal/Congressional Update



Radio Groups Petition the FCC to Eliminate with AM/FM Subcaps



According to a report from Inside Radio, six radio groups, including Alpha Media, Connoisseur Media, East Arkansas Broadcasters, Galaxy Communications, Jackson Radio Works and Roberts Communications, are requesting that the FCC review the AM/FM radio subcaps as the agency considers relaxing broadcast cross-ownership regulations.

Statewide Tornado Drill Scheduled

for April 19




In conjunction with Michigan's Severe Weather Awareness Week, April 16-22, broadcasters and emergency management partners statewide are encouraged to participate in a statewide tornado drill at 1:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, April 19.  Read more here...





Indiana EAS Breach Is Reminder of Real Cybersecurity Threat to Stations



You may have read that an Indiana broadcaster's EAS system was recently hacked, triggering multiple EAS alerts on linked stations and warning of a "zombie invasion." The station group has been in touch with federal authorities and equipment suppliers to diagnose exactly what happened.

Longtime Motor City Sportscaster Eli Zaret has joined WJR-AM (Detroit) as host of a new daily sports feature, which will be heard on Guy Gordon's afternoon drive program.  The feature, "After Further Review" will air weekdays at 4:36 p.m.  Read more here...




Michele DeSelms Leaving WXMI-TV



Michele DeSelms is leaving Tribune Media's WXMI-TV (Grand Rapids) after more than 18 years. DeSelms anchored the station's first newscast in 1999. Read more here...
