Rob Elhenicky has been continually recognized as one of Lansing's top 5 lobbyists. Rob will discuss the current state of the government in Michigan, as well as give emphasis on the importance of grassroots efforts when it comes to advocacy.

DC: The Current State of Affairs. Presented by Curtis LeGeyt

Join the Executive Vice President, Government Relations for the National Association of Broadcasters, Curtis LeGeyt as he discusses the current state of affairs in DC and what to expect in the coming year.  In LeGeyt's role at the NAB, he leads NAB's advocacy before the U.S. Congress and White House to protect and preserve free, local broadcasting. LeGeyt will share different methods and practices for advocacy within the industry.

Michigan's Broadcasters To Honor Rep. Candice Miller

The Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) and The Michigan Association of Public Broadcasters (MAPB) will honor Representative Candice S. Miller (R-10th) with a Distinguished Lifetime of Public Service Award during the Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement Award ceremonies, Tuesday, August 30.  Read more here...

The 2016 Advocacy Conference and MAB Annual Meeting, plus the Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement Award ceremonies will be held August 30-31 at the Inn at St. John's in Plymouth.

Engineering Spotlight:  Allan Augustyn, WJMN-TV (Marquette)

Allan Augustyn (W8FYZ)  is Chief Engineer for Nexstar Broadcasting Group's WJMN-TV, Marquette.

Brief Engineering Resume: 

Allan:  I have been the Chief for over 2 years, since WJMN's full HD studios were built in the spring of 2014 in Marquette and local news was launched.

I was previously chief engineer for twelve and a half years (12.5) at the Radio Results Network in Escanaba, Michigan (then a five station group).

Previous to becoming a chief engineer, I did contract engineering work for a couple of years for various radio groups in Upper Michigan while being employed full-time in another industry.  Read more here...

LP-2 Change in NW Michigan Region

SECC/EAS Chairman Gary Blievernicht has announced that, effective August 15, 2016, the LP-2 station for this region will now be WMKC-FM, 102.9, licensed to Indian River, Michigan and serving the Petoskey area.  WMKC replaces WGFM.  Stations that may have issues receiving WMKC are asked to contact Gary.

State of Michigan Legislative Update

MSC Rules Police Held Harmless For Lying In Certain Circumstances

In a unanimous opinion issued by the Michigan Supreme Court (MSC), the panel of judges held that police officers, regardless of whether they lie, cannot be charged criminally from an involuntary statement. The court, acting in People v. Harris (SC docket No. 149872), overturned a decision by the Court of Appeals. The case examined whether three Detroit officers could be charged with obstruction of justice after lying in an internal investigation about whether one of them, Officer Nevin Hughes, assaulted a person while on duty.  Read more here...


Michigan Campaign Finance Network Releases TV Ad Spending Report

According to the Michigan Campaign Finance Network, Republican 10th Congressional candidate Paul Mitchel has aired $662,776 in broadcast television ads in the Detroit media market as of last week.

FCC Will Unveil Forward Auction Bidders Mid-July

According to the report in Broadcasting & Cable, the FCC stated that it would reveal the final list of eligible bidders in the forward portion of the broadcast incentive auction. Upfront payments from the approximately 100 bidders who are eligible to bid and subject to those payments were due to the FCC by July 1.   Read more here...


FOIA Bill Signed Into Law

On June 30, President Barack Obama signed a Freedom of Information Act upgrade that orders the creation of a single federal online portal for info requests. Noting the federal government gets more FOIA requests than ever before, Obama said the bill codifies some of the reforms already made, and allows for ongoing efforts to make the process faster and cheaper.  Read more here...

Though many eyes are on the race for president, Congress is at work in D.C. and they need to hear from you. What have you done this week that impacts their constituents (your viewers and listeners)? An easier question might be, what haven't you done? 

Remember, your legislators need to know the many ways you are serving your community. If it's an investigative report, a charity event or emergency coverage, don't be shy about educating them.  Read more here...

Traffic Director Spotlight:  Jamie White, MAB

Jamie White joined the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) in June as NCSA/Membership Assistant.  Among her duties is handling NCSA/PEP (Public Education Program) traffic.  Jamie replaces Pam Cutler who recently went to work for MAB member stations WLNS and WLAJ-TV in Lansing. 

Q2: What is your favorite comfort food?

Jamie: Cheesecake.

Q3: When I'm not working, I'd rather be ...

Jamie:  Racing or playing in the mud. Dirt track racing and mud bogs are where I go to have fun. Getting to share that enjoyment with my kids, makes it even better.

Detroit Radio Veteran Rod Hansen Passes at 75

Rod Hansen, a Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame inductee and longtime WJR-AM radio journalist, passed away July 4 at his Canton, Michigan home.

While at WJR, he earned dozens of awards during his 38-year career, including two Peabody Awards. Read more here..


Craig Russell Joins WUPS/WTWS

Veteran programmer and on-air personality Craig Russell has joined Black Diamond Broadcast Group's WUPS-FM/WTWS-FM (Houghton Lake) as Program Director for the stations.  In addition, Russell will host the morning show on WUPS.  Read more here...


Greater Media Flips WMGC-FM to Classic Hop-Hop

At noon on July 1, Greater Media flipped the switch and WMGC-FM unveiled the "All New 105.1 The Bounce, Detroit's Throwback Hip-Hop and R&B."
