Extravagant generosity on UMC #GivingTuesday

United Methodists once again responded with extravagant generosity on UMC #GivingTuesday. On December 2, 2014, more than $2.5 million was donated online through The Advance to support mission and ministries around the world. The denomination's General Board of Global Ministries matched the first $1 million in gifts to help build excitement and leverage donations. More than 770 projects and missionaries received more 8,700 gifts through UMC #GivingTuesday. The response was global with donors from 25 countries giving generously. Read more

Use new posters to tell the story

It's been said that The United Methodist Church will not end malaria alone, and it's also been said, malaria will not be conquered without the work of The United Methodist Church. You are making that kind of difference in saving lives! Because of you, a child lives every minute, who may have died before. Tell the story of Imagine No Malaria through posters you can print in your church office or local copy center.

These new posters are available in The Box on the Church Resources at www.inmohio.org. They are in the Advent folder, but have been designed for year-round appeal.

Interfaith event addresses human trafficking
One hundred and sixty five people recently discovered the horrific realities of human trafficking and domestic violence that are present in the State of Ohio and around the globe. An interfaith team, co-chaired by Linda Bales Todd, member of Bellbrook United Methodist Church, sponsored "Faith, Awareness and Action....Addressing Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence" at the University of Dayton's River Campus on October 29th. The team of presenters and panelists included speakers from United Theological Seminary and from Christian, Muslim and Jewish traditions. Keynote speaker was Representative Teresa Fedor, the leading advocate on human trafficking in the Ohio State Legislature. For more information and resources from the event visit westohioumc.org/humantraffic or westohioumc.org/domesticviolence
What makes a meaning-full gift?
Giving cost-free gifts isn't always about low budgets or Scrooge-like reputations. Instead, freebies can be about kindness, memories, and creativity. Thought-full-ness. Gifts of meaning are bestowed out of gratitude for the difference someone has made in your life, or to make a difference in the life of another. A cotton ball, a journal, doll clothes, an old bible - read the stories behind these favorites and others.
140 years celebrated at United Methodist related school in Japan

Aoyama Gakuin is a United Methodist related school in Tokyo, Japan, with strong ties to West Ohio through Rev. Paul T. Shew, an Extension  Minister serving in Japan for 15 years. Founded by Methodist missionaries, the school celebrated its 140th anniversary recently with worship and ceremonies attended by over 1700 people, including Rev. Dr. Gerald Lord, Associate General Secretary of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. The school includes a highly respected university, but is also a comprehensive educational institution encompassing over 25,000 students from kindergarten through graduate schools. A glimpse of the strong Methodist character of the school can be seen in the 140-second video produced to celebrate the 140th anniversary. Rev. Shew, who is the narrator for the video, said, "We're proud to be a United Methodist school, and trying to shine our light as best we can from this part of the world."

Let us remember in prayer those grieving the loss of their loved one, and remember in thanksgiving the life of:

Mrs. E. Louise Morrison, 101, who died on October 14. Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis H. Morrison, and is survived by stepdaughter, Patricia Jarvis; niece and nephew, Octa Burgess, David Kolk (Susan); and a host of friends. Louise was a deaconess in the West Ohio Conference with a vast service history in the West Ohio Conference and the denomination. A listing of Louise Morrison's positions does not give a full picture of a woman who loved God and her church. A true storyteller, her stories of adventure enthralled all who had the pleasure of listening to her. She served with the Women's Division in New York City, traveling as a goodwill ambassador to Deaconess Centers in Europe. Later she served WSCS and United Methodist Women on the Conference Executive Committee, Nominating Committee and Coordination and Review Committee. She served as President of the Continuing Corporation of the National Woman's Home Missionary Society for 20 years, Assistant Business Manager for four National Assemblies of United Methodist Women and delegate to four World Methodist Council and World Federation of Methodist Women meetings. As a secretary she served Bishop H. Lester Smith, Bishop F. Gerald Ensley and Bishop Hazen G. Werner. In the West Ohio Conference she served as both member and leader of the West Ohio Commission on Archives and History and was on the Nominating Committee, Pastoral Care and Counseling Committee, Board of Missions and Council on Ministries. Obituary
