Chaplain of the Week
Summit helps candidates discern call

Over the first two days of August, 35 candidates discerning their call to ministry were engaged with an equal number of mentors and leaders in a Candidacy Summit, held at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, to discover God's call on their life and in what form that call would take.  Read about their journey, view the photos, and watch the messages brought by Rev. Mebane McMahon and Rev. Curnell Graham.

Freedom School social action day

Be inspired by our West Ohio Freedom School's participation in the recent Children's Defense Fund's (CDF) National Day of Social Action. This action took place in 200 Freedom Schools sites across the country; the CDF national office chose to come cover the one in Columbus. The Columbus Children's March started at Broad Street United Methodist Church with a march to the Ohio Statehouse. We are thankful that our churches were well-represented by Broad Street United Methodist Church, Asbury North United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Churches of Alexandria/Croton/Johnstown, and the high school class from Summit on 16th United Methodist Church.

Laity Sunday and Imagine No Malaria, a time to come together!

Laity Sunday has been a Methodist tradition since 1929, it's a Sunday the laity takes the lead in preparing and providing worship. Designated for the third Sunday in October themes are provided from the General Board of Discipleship, this year's theme is "Disciples Called to Action: Engaging Small Groups."  Recently, we talked with Council on Development Board member and former Annual Conference Co-Leader Valarie Willis about how the Laity Sunday theme and Imagine No Malaria might connect. You can read her thoughts here, on our Imagine No Malaria website.

Scholarship Support for Camps

WOC Camps Logo The summer camp season has ended with a bang, and a much desired cooler summer. This summer 107 youth and adults received financial aid in the amount of $10,905 to attend at Camps Widewater, Otterbein and Wesley. This represents 12% of our programmed summer camps attendance, learning about the culture of call in their faith walk with Jesus. Our scholarship fund covered about one third of this cost, but we honored every scholarship request. Would you prayerfully consider a donation to the scholarship fund to help fully fund the amount awarded? Please send checks to West Ohio Camping Office, 32 Wesley Blvd. Worthington, Ohio 43085. Questions? Contact Ken Overholser.

North Katanga team on mission

Prayers for these 11 West Ohio mission team members who left Sunday to work with North Katanga lay and clergy. Our team will be leading an experiential training on spiritual formation of children, which they have been working on developing with North Katanga leaders. Another exciting part of this mission will be the creation of a mural at the Kamina Children's Home, which the community will help design and paint. Team members represent three districts and four congregations. View the photo on Facebook to see the team members and churches represented.
