News from our Missionaries

Thank you for bringing us closer to our goal!

In just the 365 days since the challenge was first presented to the membership by Bishop Palmer at the 2013 Annual Conference, the people of the West Ohio Conference are near the 80% milestone of our $3.5 million campaign for Imagine No MalariaThis opportunity is one of our greatest blessings  - the chance for West Ohioans to save 350,000 lives in sub-Saharan Africa - without ever having to leave the comfort of our hometowns in Ohio. How is your church a part of saving 350,000 lives from this deadly and treatable disease? Reach out today to Dave Boling, West Ohio Coordinator for Imagine No Malaria, with your Estimated Goal forms and your questions. See the full report to our members on this campaign

Help me, please; I'm a caregiver.

Why, oh, why do caregivers think they have to do everything by themselves? Is it our rugged American individualism or some kind of arrogant stoicism and pride that makes us believe our journey as caregivers must be a solo venture? There are 65.7 million unpaid caregivers for family or friends in the United States, many of whom have a hard time asking for help.  Not Alone: Encouragement for Caregivers is a hardcover book of 150 devotions, filled with stories, practical suggestions and theological reflection drawn from the author's experience caring for her late husband as well as those of friends and support group members. God is with caregivers on their journey. Church family, relatives and friends can be there, too. Please offer to help and make sure no caregiving pilgrimage becomes a solo venture.  Tips on how to be helpful.

New resource for older adult ministry

Older adults (Baby Boomers and Seniors) make up a sizable portion of the general population and ever larger portion of our churches. To say that they are not all the same is both a simple, yet profound, statement. They encompass a four-decade age range and a variety of health circumstances, engagement in society, and faith expression. Just to be older does not mean that one has either made a faith commitment, or has matured in one's faith. West Ohio's Encore Ministries seeks to resource churches in their ministry with older adults.  Learn more

How young people are shaping the church
Global Young People's Convocation - Update 4
Dr. Timothy Bias, General Secretary of the General Board of Discipleship

In a video update from the Global Young People's Convocation and Legislative Assembly, young people and other church leaders share how they are affecting the church and the world. Among the ways: helping with recovery from Typhoon Rammusun, which the youth found themselves unexpectedly experiencing July 15 along with the rest of their host country, the Philippines. With the help of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), attendees of the convocation prepared meal packages for families in the Philippines affected by the recent storm.  Learn more

Activism through animation

Subjects like AIDS and domestic violence are no laughing matter, but Firdaus Kharas has found a way to use humor to get people to think differently about serious issues. The director and social innovator has created a series of animated shorts that confront such issues in the hopes of creating what Kharas calls "a cultural shift."  Kharas is a panelist at the upcoming Game Changers Summit, hosted by United Methodist Communications Sept. 3-5 in Nashville.
