Appointment season

Dear beloved friends in the West Ohio Conference, 

 

Bishop PalmerYou are abundantly aware that we are in the appointment season. Although appointment making goes on year-round there is an intensity and focus to this good work that comes with the winter and spring. For several months now I have been thinking and praying about those who I might appoint to serve as conference superintendents who in turn would be deployed to be servant leaders in specific districts. This year I have responsibility for naming four new superintendents. Jocelyn Roper to lead Miami Valley District

Jocelyn Roper Bishop Gregory V. Palmer announced today that The Rev. Dr. Jocelyn M. Roper will be appointed conference superintendent of the Miami Valley District in the West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church, effective July 1, 2014. Rev. Roper will follow the Rev. Dr. Christopher Heckaman who will become senior pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church in Columbus after a five-year appointment leading the district.(read more)

Ken Overholser named Director of Camping & Retreat Ministries

The West Ohio Conference is pleased to announce that Mr. Ken Overholser has been selected to become the permanent director of West Ohio Conference Camping & Retreat Ministries. Ken has been serving as interim director for the last ten months. Seventeen candidates responded to the nationwide search, and after carefully screening candidates and holding interviews over the last few months, the Conference's final selection team (including representation from the Cabinet, Connectional Ministries' Next Generations Lead Team, the Bishop's Executive Staff and the Conference Lay Leader) has confirmed Ken as the outstanding choice. (read more)

United Methodist Women Assembly 2014 | April 24-27 | Louisville, KYDo you know women who are eager to learn how to make a difference at the grass-roots level in their communities? Encourage them to attend the 2014 Assembly which will be held April 25 to 27, in Louisville at the Kentucky International Convention Center. This grass-roots Assembly will help attendees find their individual voice for mission and feel the unyielding support of thousands of United Methodist Women members and partners in being equipped to give more of themselves toward mission.  (learn more)

We've all watched the evolution of a morning sunrise. The far horizon begins to glow, until that first burst of light breaks through, piercing the long night of darkness. Ever been up all night waiting on the sunrise of a new day? Depending on what you are waiting on, it determines how long it can seem. 

 

Interesting, it's as if God wanted to greet them first...(wow, what a privilege) ...and to get them cracking (ooh, what responsibility). With the privilege came GREAT responsibility. (read more of our Miami Valley superintendent's e-couragement)

The West Ohio Conference offers two scholarship opportunities for West Ohio undergraduate students attending accredited institutions of higher education - the West Ohio Student Leadership Scholarship and the West Ohio Ethnic Minority Scholarship. Deadline for submission is April 1, 2014. Click here to learn more about these two West Ohio scholarships and to apply. 

 

In addition, the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) offers additional scholarship opportunities. You can find links to information about those scholarships here as well.

Donor gives $1.1 million to imagine no malaria

Not everyone can give $1.1 million, but everyone can think of a way to "give just a tiny bit more," says Barbara Ferguson, whose donation is the largest ever given from an individual donor to Imagine No Malaria.  Ferguson, a lifelong Methodist, has been a member of Los Altos United Methodist Church since 1985. She was one of the leaders of the church's Stephen Ministry for 20 years and has worked as a volunteer in the finance office for 17 years. (read more)
