God's frozen chosen
|
Rev. Stephen Bennett, superintendent of the Northwest Plains District, reflects on his many visits to Niagara Falls with his wife, Madora. The contrast between their visits to the falls in warm weather and the dead of winter is moving. He writes, "There is a lesson here for the church. We have humorously been referred to at times as God's frozen chosen. When we allow our love for God to grow cold it is hard for him to channel his power through us. The tasks which God calls us to accomplish are left undone because of insufficient power." (read more of Steve's letter)

Shift happens | The West Ohio Conference was well-represented in attendance and leadership at the recent "Shift Happens: Hope in the Midst of Transition. Held January 16-18 in Houston, this was a national gathering of about 160 Urban and Town & Country lay and clergy folks from around the country. Organizers of the event recognize that the similarities between urban and rural congregations and ministry outweigh the differences in context, and brought the groups together to examine how networking together could empower and equip us to be catalysts for transformation. Telling the story award
|
Has your church team told any inspiring stories on video in the past year? Exciting ministry is happening in United Methodist churches all across our conference, and many local churches have become quite creative in "telling the story" of their ministry successes! Our hope is to facilitate the sharing of those stories to as wide an audience as possible with the second annual "Telling the Story Award" competition. Not only do we want to witness the stories you're telling, we want to celebrate the stories and your work with the entire conference. This year we've added five categories to the video awards and a People's Choice award! (read more and learn how to enter)

Developing effective leadership in rural ministry
|
The reality is there has been a change in rural ministry in our lifetime. What worked previously, no longer works today. Leader Ed Kail is an outstanding teacher and trainer with his focus on small membership churches, especially in the town & country and rural areas. During his presentation he will help you and your church leaders learn how ministry has changed; learn how our thinking about God, the church, and ourselves contributes to the decline; and be equipped in understanding the different cultural ways of the rural areas.
Event is held on choice of two days and two locations. (learn more)

Exploring the link between food and faith |
"A meal is the orienting metaphor for the Christian tradition," says Jennifer Ayers, assistant professor of religious education and director of the Religious Education program. "Within every meal-and in the paradigmatic meal of the Eucharist-is embedded an invitation to both divine encounter and moral responsibility."
Ayers latest book, Good Food: Grounded Practical Theology (Baylor University Press, 2013), explores issues of food justice and practices that are healing the system while deepening Christian faith along the way. (learn more)

Cultural trends you may have missed | You may have noticed the recent rise of videos and images in communications. However, you might have missed some larger cultural trends like the growth of online learning and the new ways the traditional space called a library is being used by young adults.
These emerging trends may not be prevalent in your ministry, but perhaps they are visible in your community. How will your church respond and serve proactively? (learn more)

"In the Bleak Midwinter" United Methodist Hymnal No. 221 |
Poet and author Christina Georgiana Rossetti's deep faith is thought to be partially the result of the solace that she found in writing as a result of her poor health from age sixteen. In the first memorable stanza of In the Bleak Midwinter, Rossetti creates a dreary and desolate image of the world into which the infant Jesus appeared by drawing on the experience of a British winter. She is not suggesting that it literally snowed in Bethlehem, but is drawing on a long-established literary idea of associating snow with Christ's birth. (learn more)
