I Believe You: Faiths' Response To Intimate Partner Violence |
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In the United States, one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Globally, the number is one in three. Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women in the U.S. between the ages of 15 and 44- more than car accidents, rapes, and muggings combined. In the U.S., 1200 women are killed each year by their partner.
Within the United Methodist Church, the West Ohio Conference has committed to raising awareness of this issue and participating in Domestic Violence Awareness Month ( read the full resolution adopted here) Bulletin inserts and other resources for individuals and churches can be found on the conference's Domestic Violence webpage.

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land this February
|
Bishop Gregory and Mrs. Cynthia Palmer invite you to join them on the trip of a lifetime to the Holy Land. This extraordinary pilgrimage will provide a unique opportunity to grow together in faith and community. We will visit where Jesus was born, walk where Jesus walked and stand where Jesus taught and preached as we explore Jerusalem. Together we will discover answers as we pray and worship in the sites made sacred by Jesus.

Veterans Day Resources |
They give up comforts so we can live in freedom. They leave their families behind to protect ours. They return changed by their experiences, and they are in need of our love and support. As you celebrate Veterans Day on November 11, giving compassion to those who serve and their families, think how your congregation can continue to find opportunities to support them year round.

Coffee shops and community |
You may believe the church is to be a cultural change agent in our communities, but the truth is that many coffee shops have taken some of that responsibility. Borrowing from a sociological theory by Roy Oldenburg of everyone wanting a place besides home and work in which to feel welcome, Starbucks and other coffee shops have become the "Cheers" place where if you come often enough everyone knows your name. Can churches learn something from these coffee shop experiences? (read more)

Celebrate children with Children's Sabbath |
Sponsored by the Children's Defense Fund, the National Observance of Children's Sabbaths Celebration is a way for faith communities to celebrate children as sacred gifts of the Divine, and provides the opportunity for houses of worship to renew and live out their moral responsibility to care, protect and advocate for all children. Though the Children's Sabbaths Weekend is traditionally held the third weekend of October, it can be celebrated any time throughout the year. (resources and more information)
