He rode in wearing a black frock coat, trousers and vest, atop a bay quarter horse named Anne, his graying hair bobbing up and down in a ponytail. "It has been 200 years since I have stood before you. You have grown," Pastor Steve Rodgers of the First United Methodist Church in London told the 300 people who had gathered under a tent at the Madison County Historical Society to celebrate the church's bicentennial yesterday morning. Please welcome Dave Boling 
David W. Boling of Powell United Methodist Church has been hired as the new Associate Director of the West Ohio Council on Development. As Associate Director, Dave will work with the Executive Director, Rev. George Cooper, to equip local churches to grow generous stewards to advance the mission and vision of the West Ohio Conference. His first task will be to step into the leadership role of field coordinator for West Ohio's $3.5M Imagine No Malaria. (read more)
God moments in Alaska for Greenville church mission team

During the first week of August, a group of eighteen people traveled to Sutton, Alaska for Evangelical United Methodist (EUM) Church's second annual Alaska mission trip. Sutton is a community where homes are in need of serious repairs, substance abuse is common, families are broken and a sense of hopelessness and despair prevails. (continued)

Mission Opportunity: The Caribbean Connection

This mission team will support the community of Brisas del Mar Colombia in February 2014, with a construction and/or maintenance project for the local school or church facilities.  It is organized and led by Michael Estep, member of Cherry Grove United Methodist Churc in Cincinnati. Persons participating on this trip will need some rudimentary construction skills. Additionally, team members will engage in a variety of humanitarian ministries, among them visitations of families in the community while offering prayers and fellowship, sharing in worship with community members, and meeting and greeting the residents of the Brisas del Mar community.  (more information)

Reaching across the "digital divide"

While today's technology allows for richer communication options than ever before, studies have shown that "the digital divide is still a very real issue." According to former Mashable writer Alex Fitzpatrick, "While 91 percent of Americans as a whole have access to wired broadband speeds, there is a very different reality if you lack a college education, if you're poor or if you're Hispanic or African American." The same disparity exists in rural and urban areas versus the suburbs. Read how to improve communication with the "unplugged."

Ohio Veterans Bonus

The Ohio Veterans Bonus is a thank-you from the citizens of Ohio to all the members of the Armed Forces who served during the time of the Persian Gulf War, the Iraq War and the Afghanistan War. Veterans of the Persian Gulf era must apply by December 31, 2013, while veterans of the Iraq era have until December 31, 2014 to apply. The Ohio Council of Churches is requesting that our churches share information about this widely. Ministry of Memory
Ministry of Memory (UMTV) Since 1982, the United Methodist Commission on Archives and History has housed denominational records and rare finds on the Drew University campus in New Jersey. Archivist Dale Patterson says, "We describe our work here as the ministry of memory. We want to help the church remember where it's been, where it's come from, to give us an orientation toward the future."  (West Ohio Archives are housed at Ohio Wesleyan University.)
Messages of Peace and Solidarity with Kenya and Pakistan

An attack on September 21 at a mall in Kenya killed dozens of people resulting in a multi-day siege with hundreds wounded. The following day, another violent attack killed about 80 worshippers at All Saints Church, in Pakistan. Head of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, Thomas Kemper, said "as parts of the one body of Christ, we share in the sorrow of those who are affected by these heinous attacks." (continued)

Rev. David Trout (Retired - 2005), September 18, survived by wife, Pat Trout. A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 6 at United Methodist Church of the Messiah, 51 N. State St., Westerville. Calling hours at the church, 2-4 pm; service will be at 4 pm.  Clergy should robe with red stole.  A light meal will follow the service at the church.
