Expectations of Members of United Methodist Churches in Central District

A couple months ago, I talked about my expectation of Pastors in our district, and I had said I was planning to write a similar article about members of our churches.  So today, I'd like to think with you about the expectations for the laity of our congregations.

I believe the following are essential if we are to have thriving vital congregations:

  1. That the desire of every member of a UMC is to be a fully devoted disciple of Jesus the Christ, whose life mission is to make disciples of Jesus for the transformation of the world.
  2. That every Christ follower/disciple will seek to grow in her/his faith on a daily basis. It is true our churches seek to assist us through Bible studies, small groups for prayer, book studies, recovery, accountability and the like. (This is what we mean when we talk about each church offering discipleship opportunities!)
  3. That every member is involved in a serving ministry, where transformation of the world is truly lived out.  I believe the single greatest need in this area is for mentoring children and youth! But you may love work camps, working with youth groups, Stephen Ministry, food pantries, visiting in jails or hospitals, or at Brightwood Community Center, Vida Nueva, East Tenth Children and Youth, etc.   The key is that you choose something and get involved!! Call your Pastor TODAY if you are uncertain where you would like to serve, or where you might be gifted to serve.
  4. That every member will desire what is best for the future of one's congregation, not what I personally desire!  (This is by far the most difficult of the essentials!) Unfortunately, far too many of the churches in our district are declining in their participation rate and worship attendance.  And to speak the truth in love, I must say that too often the answer to what should our church do in the future is predominantly answered by those most involved who say by their desires and actions, "I think our church should do what I like and what is meaningful to me." Regrettably, this does not consider what those outside our church in our community would say that we need to offer as servants of Jesus.
  5. That YOU will treat and support your Pastor as you expect your Pastor to support and treat you. Each pastor makes great sacrifices, goes to the hospital at all hours, sacrifices family time and more for the sake of your congregation.  It is my expectation that you will honor and affirm her/him as God's chosen leader of your congregation.  He/she is not perfect, but neither are you and I! So, in the words of a member of a church I previously served, "Be gentle with your pastor, and show her/him the grace you desire."

For the only cause that matters,

Bert Kite signature

Africa University Campaign Speakers Available to Local Churches

Local churches who would like to have a speaker come to their church to inform their congregation about Africa University and the Indiana A.U. Campaign can contact Ruth Ellen Stone at ruthellen1@juno.com or 317-839-8837. For more information, please click here.

The Indiana Annual Conference committed to support Africa University through a $1.6 million campaign to endow scholarships and a Chair in the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. We thank those churches that made a commitment to support the campaign during Annual Conference, and would like those churches to now indicate the amount of their pledge. We are also asking churches who have not made a commitment to prayerfully consider making a pledge.

During a visit to Africa University in March 2015, Bishop Coyner will report on the progress we have made with the Indiana Campaign. Our goal is to have the $1.6 million pledged before Bishop Coyner visits Africa University.

If your church has not already completed a card and would like to make a pledge, please complete this  Church Pledge Card and turn it in to your District during your Charge Conference meeting.

Charge Conference Schedule Announced
charge conference
Charge Conference season is right around the corner. Because your committee work needs to be completed weeks before your reports are due, here are some steps to take now to be prepared.

Trustees and SPRC - Annual Parsonage Inspection is addressed in the Book of Discipline, ¶258.2.16.
You may complete the inspection and air quality test at any time of the year. Your charge conference reports require the date of your annual parsonage inspection and air quality test.
Send your Parsonage Condition Agreement form and air quality test results to the district resource center at the time of the inspection and test. Parsonage walk-through form is available here.

SPRC will want to begin the process of setting the 2015 pastoral compensation in time for the church/administrative council to approve the compensation several weeks prior to your charge conference report due date. Click Here for Minimum Compensation Guidelines for 2015

Committee on Nominations and Leadership Development identifies and invites spiritual leaders for positions to carry out the ministries that fulfill the mission of making disciples and transforming the community. Your local congregation's 2015 leadership with contact information is part of the charge conference report, and is one of the important votes taken at your charge conference.

Please begin planning for your charge conference by setting meetings now to have the proper information gathered when reports are available to complete online (mid-August).
Each church is encouraged to send no fewer than five people (one clergy and four laity) to represent the church at charge conference.  In addition, if your work is not completed prior to your designated time frame before your charge conference convenes, you will be asked to attend a later charge conference.  Thank you for your attention to these important items. If you have questions, please contact Heather or Robin at the Central District center (central.district@inumc.org or call 317-924-4140.)

Click here for the conference schedule by church name.

Detroit Conference Needs ERTs for Mucking Out
disaster relief

The Rev. Jim Byerly, Indiana Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, has just been asked by the Detroit United Methodist Conference Disaster Response Team for immediate help from certified Early Response Teams to come to the Detroit area for "mucking out" - cleaning out houses that were damaged by the recent floods which affected hundreds of homes in Detroit. Byerly reports that he has one group that hopes to deploy this coming Sunday, Aug. 24, and return Thursday, Aug. 28. If you are an UMCOR certified ERT responder and would like to form a team to go to Detroit, contact Byerly at ert@inumc.org or call 812-756-1195 at your earliest convenience. Byerly also is teaching an ERT200 Team Leader class this Friday, Aug. 22, at St. Luke's UMC, 100 W. 86th Street in Indianapolis and can add people to that training. This class is a re-certification class as well as an advanced Early Response Team leader training.  Click here to register.

Resource to Help Churches Engage Local Schools

A number of conferences and districts are encouraging churches to engage their local schools as a way to reconnect with their communities. Last spring the Lewis Center for Church Leadership sponsored a conference on this topic and later developed a DVD/CD resource to guide congregations in considering questions that are critical to the success of a school-focused service initiative.

The response to this resource, Engaging Local Schools, has been positive, and many have asked about placing bulk orders as a way to help churches get started. In response to this interest, I am attaching information for those wishing to purchase multiple copies of the DVD/CD.

Engaging Local Schools provides models and best practices on subjects such as:

  • Why Schools Matter to the Church
  • Discerning a Vision for Supporting a Local School
  • Supplying Student Needs
  • Supporting and Affirming Teachers
  • Helping Students Succeed
  • Developing a Heart for the Needs of Children and Schools
  • Stories of Successful Partnerships

In addition to the bulk rate, you may purchase one or more of these resources using the promo code SCHOOLS2014 to save $15 through August 31. If you have any questions, contact Joe Arnold at jearnold@wesleyseminary.edu or 202-885-8560. If you prefer to pay by check, during the ordering process at step 3, "Choose Payment Method," select the first option "Print order form to pay by check."
