            New Pastors among us!

Do you remember how it was when you first moved into the area that you now call home?  You had to learn where the grocery stores, doctors' offices,  and favorite restaurants are located.

Do you remember the hard choices required to find a church home which would meet your family's needs? Can you recall the awareness that you are the new person on the block, and yet puzzling why no one has gone out of his/her way to welcome you?

Today, I, and members of the District Team (Karen Devaisher, Brad Miller, Joe Bottorff, Lisa Morris and Robin Brown) met with several pastors who are new to the Central District, and for whom these are not academic questions!

These new colleagues have come from various parts of the state, and they have now been appointed by Bishop Coyner to be serving churches in Central District. So now they have to learn new hospitals, streets, church buildings, AND get acquainted with a whole new set of folks!  Whew! What a formidable task!

So to help YOU welcome these new pastors into our midst, over the next few weeks, we'd like to introduce you to these committed servants of Christ who have been called to serve among us.

We hope that you'll get acquainted with them, welcome them, and perhaps - if you are a pastor - that you might - this week!  nvite them for coffee or to have lunch together.

(Do you remember when a colleague invited you, or you wish someone would have asked you to lunch?!)

Well, this is your chance!  The new pastors are:

Jeff Buck (Mt Auburn), Andrew Charnstrom (Union Chapel), Ben Dilworth (Shirley Wilkinson), Andrew Scanlan-Holmes (Roberts Park), Randy McQueen ( Good Shepherd), Billy Nickrand (Castleton), Trenton Prieshoff (Bartlett Chapel), Joseph Smith (Fortville), Charlie Wilfong (Plainfield), Chuck Wanner (Abundant Harvest), John Hay East Tenth Street UMC)

This week, we would like to introduce you to  Jeff Buck, Andy Charnstrom and Ben Dilworth

For the only cause that matters,

Jeff Buck, originally from Carmel, IN, and his wife Julie (originally from Kansas), have four children: Sarah (Derek) Heinz, Anna, Elizabeth and Daniel. They are coming to Mt Auburn UMC from Noblesville Emmanuel UMC and previously, Old North UMC in Evansville.  Julie has her own music ministry and will lead worship, sing and prepare special music. She also leads workshops and special events.

Andy Charnstrom and his wife Donna (both originally from New Palestine, IN) went to IUPUI and IU School of Law. They are coming to Union Chapel UMC from Brazil Union UMC where Andy served since 2008. They have three children Katie (Patrick), Michael and Will, and four grandsons (Colin, Sean, Noah and Liam).  Andy and Donna enjoy reading, camping, fishing and working out, and Andy enjoys playing golf. They recently discovered Hilton Head Island and fell in love with it.

Ben Dilworth and his wife Lori are expecting twins this December. They came to Shirley-Wilkinson Community UMC after five years at Rockdale UMC and three years at Alquina UMC. Ben tells us they are both "big nerds" who enjoy reading and playing board games and plinking around on the computer. Ben is originally from Richmond, IN and Lori, who is completing her PhD (IU) is from Elizabethtown, KY.

Last month I discussed foreign lottery scams and how they are perpetrated on unsuspecting victims. This month I would like to talk about sweepstakes frauds and how they operate in much the same manner. Sweepstakes fraud scammers often solicit victim participation by promising money and prizes in exchange for the payment of small fees or the purchase of merchandise or tickets. Victims frequently receive deceptive mailings or receive high-pressure telemarketing calls that congratulate them for having already won valuable items, such as cars, cash, jewelry, and vacations. The touted prizes are usually non-existent, low-value, or worthless, and important details about the sweepstakes, such as the true odds of winning, are omitted or misrepresented.

Scam artists persuade the "winner" that payment for taxes and fees must be sent immediately and that all negotiations must be conducted in utter secrecy. These restrictions prevent victims from conducting proper and timely research regarding the solicitation's legitimacy and isolate victims from the protective efforts of family and friends. Both sweepstakes and foreign lottery frauds prey on the victim's desire to make fast money along with the fear of losing this "opportunity" if actions are not taken quickly.

Investigations into these scams show that scammers frequently employ counterfeit checks to obtain victim cooperation. First-time victims may receive counterfeit cashier's checks or money orders after sending significant personal funds as payment for taxes and fees. These checks serve to encourage the "winner", who begins to question the legitimacy of the contest after repeated attempts to receive their prize, to send more money. If you receive a check in this fashion, immediately take it to your bank and talk with them about the origin of the funds.

Finally, in some instances, the scammer will request bank account information from the victim in order to process the purchase of merchandise or tickets. Victims subsequently report that the scammer transacted multiple unauthorized debits from their accounts without their knowledge. You should never give out your banking information to someone you are not familiar with and have not confirmed their true intentions. Always remember, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at Charlie.Rownd@inumc.org.
