AIR AMBULANCE INDUSTRY MEETS ITS UBER

The process of ordering an air ambulance for a patient has always been an inefficient process that wastes a lot of time.

Air ambulance travel is very expensive. It constitutes a significant part of a travel health insurance claim.

Now the air ambulance industry has met its UBER.
I learned about this disruptive innovation at the Travel Health Insurance Association (THIA) 2016 meeting in Naples, Florida.

Aero-Plan (aero-plan.com) has created a platform that helps a user get competitive bids for global air ambulance service from 63 air ambulance suppliers.

The business was created by a team consisting of Dr Liron Beltzer, the Chief Medical Officer, who has deep knowledge of aviation medicine and the air ambulance industry and by Ian Dorot, the chief technology officer, who specializes in converting business logic into online solutions.
This use of technology is changing the economics of the air ambulance industry by efficiently matching buyers and suppliers.

In a fragmented, inefficient market, Aero-Plan creates visibility and transparency across the value chain, facilitates cost containment, mitigates medical and financial risk and ensures quality service.
The technology also helps air ambulance companies to fill empty legs.

Relying on real-time monitoring of air ambulances, as well as other patients that need similar transport routes, Aero-Plan finds empty legs or patient pooling opportunities by combining flights.

This visibility creates cost efficiencies resulting in quicker transports and cost efficiency for all parties.

Savings can be in the order of 40%.
The response from users, such as assist companies, is mixed.

Some favour the relationship model using trusted air ambulance companies.

Others welcome the efficiencies and cost savings arising from an auction model.

There is no cost to use the Aero-Plan solution for users.

The air ambulance companies pay a modest fee for jobs that are booked.
At the THIA conference, Aero-Plan was creating a stir.

Some were grumbling. Some were amazed and others amused.

Time will tell if this disruption creates sustainable value for all involved including the patients.
