NYHIGHLIGHTS OF WITHIT'S NYC DESIGN TOUR

New York, New York!

Inspiration is everywhere if you're open to it, but sometimes you have to leave town to wake your senses up. For the 30 women who participated in this year's tour, NYC was just the muse to excite, ignite and kick start the creative side of our professional and personal lives. As Jay-z and Alicia Keyes sing in one of my favorite songs, Empire State of Mind, "New York... these streets will make you feel brand new, the lights will inspire you, like there's nothing you can't do."

Creativity was the theme of 2013's WithIt New York sign trip, which concluded on Monday, May 21. We all had many 'creative captures' along the way, but because this newsletter cannot contain all of the photos, we've set up our very first WithIt NYC Design Tour Pinterest page.

Wondering what you missed? Here are some of the highlights:

Private cocktail party with Pamela Ryckman, author of Stiletto Network (all attendees got a chance to talk with Pamela and get their own autographed copy of her book right before she hit the Today Show and NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams)

Trip to the Metropolitan Museum: Many saw the new exhibit: Punk: Chaos to Couture, highlighting punk's impact on high fashion staring in the early 1970s and continuing through today or the recently concluded exhibit, Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity

  Kips Bay show house

  International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF)

Retail shopping tour with Madcap Cottage's Jason Oliver Nixon (with goodie bags and wine along the way - thanks!)

Tour of the Good Housekeeping Institute

Tour of Tinsel Trading, an amazing store

Trend presentation and great lunch (thanks!) at the Global Views showroom

Marketing and Branding Class with Apartment Therapy and amazing chocolates and cheeses (thanks!)

Dinner at the National Arts Club

One on One with interior designer and author, Celerie Kemble, including book signing

Visit to terraced apartment of artist, Barbara Krohn, friend of WithIt, who offered up amazing views of the NYC nightlight and a walk through the exclusive locked Gramercy Park

Treats along the way, two autographed books, new friends, lots of laughs and inspiration!

This tour wouldn't happen without the amazing hard work from Betty Lyn Eller and Jana Platina-Phipps, our NYC Design Tour co-chairs. Many thanks to Betty Lyn, Jana, Alicia Connolly and Deborah Klein and our wonderful sponsors.

Want to live vicariously a little more? Take a look at WithIt's Twitter stream WithIt's Twitter stream from May 19-21 or visit Ruth Olbrych's inspired blog post. Make sure you put NYC in your plans for 2014. You won't want to miss it.

There is still another terrific opportunity to get connected and inspired via WithIt in 2013: the professional conference taking place August 12-14 in Raleigh, NC. Visit the website soon to sign up.

Tinsel Trading captured our hearts with their stories.

Jana Platina-Phipps (left) enjoyed Celerie Kemble's book signing.

Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan of Apartment Therapy, talked to our tour group about the power of great branding.

ICFF had interesting pieces, like this picnic basket chaise.

The trend presentation and lunch at Global Views were great.

PausePOWER OF THE PAUSE

Notes from a graduation speech you wish you'd heard in person
It's that season...graduations and 'school's out for summer' whoops ring through the air. Whether your graduation was years ago or last week, thinking about this time of year can brings up feelings of hopefulness and sometimes even fear of "what's next?"

And while I cannot remember the commencement address when I graduated, I do now pay attention to the clips I've seen of recent addresses. If you haven't seen clips of Maria Shriver's wonderful address to the 2013 class at the University of Southern California Annenberg School Commencement, it is worth watching or reading. Her message centers on "taking a pause" in this non-stop world we live in.

"Pausing allows you to take a beat -
to take a breath in your life. As everybody else is rushing around like a lunatic out there,
I dare you to do the opposite."
-- Maria Shriver

While her address is too long to post here, if you haven't seen it or read it, it's worth taking a pause and reflecting on her great message -- whether you are a recent graduate, recently watched a loved one graduate...or truly, even if you never graduated at all.
