         May & June 2013

Greetings!

It's the hottest day of the summer today and for many of us Brits, it's been an amazing day as a British tennis player, Andy Murray, won at Wimbledon.

I know quite a few of you would have been watching, on the edge of our seats. There were lots of lessons there - surround yourself with a great team, never give up and if something goes wrong; react, learn and move on.  I'm not an expert but it seems like Andy Murray's coach, Ivan Lendl, made a huge difference to Andy's game.

I'm a great believer in having a coach and currently have 2 people helping me (thanks Cathy & Peter!!).  I'm finally going to commit to doing a formal coaching course this autumn so watch this space for more news!  I'll be looking for people to help practice.....

Workshop for Managers - Monday 7th October
So the autumn may feel like a long way off as we swelter in the heat but it will be here before we know it.  October means the DIA European Medical Information & Communications conference for me.  This year we are in Dublin, Ireland.

I'll be running my own company workshop before the conference starts.  You can influence which topic is chosen by voting.  Will it be change management? Evaluating your service? Rethinking the standard response?  Always on - dealing with pressure?  Or how about a topic that you've always wanted to have but never seen!
Voting closes this Saturday, 13th July

Happy Holidays!
So I hope you all have a wonderful holiday this summer (or winter of you're Down Under!).  I'm off on my holidays shortly to two remote locations on the sea, no mobile phone reception, no internet (and for my stay in Scotland no radio or TV).  Doesn't that sound like bliss!

Workshop for Busy Medical Information Managers, Dublin, 7th October.

I like to give people choices where possible.  I have a pretty good idea what topics are hot in Medical Information right now, but like to find out from you what you really want.  I will be running a half-day workshop for Medical Information managers or professionals at the Maldron Hotel, Dublin on Monday 7th October.

So I've decided to crowd-source the topic.  What would you or your team attend?  Vote to choose the topic I'll run. Includes
  • Rethinking the standard response
  • Mastering Change
  • Outsourcing Medical Information
  • Inspection readiness & audits
Voting closes Saturday 13th July
Mindfulness for Busy Managers Workshop, 15th November

Mindfulness is a hot topic these days.  Dr Michael Mosley, who seems to influence the next science trend (think High Intensity Training, The fasting diet (aka 5:2 diet)), is talking about how it changed his life - his personality and attitudes - this week on BBC's Horizon series.

Sue Weston & I will be running our 2nd course on Friday 15th November, Watford Quaker House (just inside M25). Mindfulness helps with anxiety, insomnia and depression but I think it also has an impact on our effectiveness at work.  Check out more or book

Is Med Info ill-prepared for challenges of increased info demand? Lacking in customer experience and less than excellent service? I disagree!

This is an interesting blog post from Blue Latitude, arguing that Medical Information is not customer focused, amongst other criticisms.  A must read to see if you agree or disagree!  Sharon.

In a recent post highlighting Blue Latitude's predictions for pharma marketing in 2013, we identified an increase in prominence of medical information within the healthcare communications mix as a key change.

Patient Info is a passion of mine: interesting code of practice case on safety info disclosure & patient with an AE.

A member of the public alleged that Pfizer had failed to warn of serious side effects of Champix (varenicline). Champix was indicated for smoking cessation.

How well does pharma do from recent product launches (last 5 years). Novartis, J&J, BMS = :-) Pfizer & AZ = :-(

In 2012, 10 Big Pharma companies (AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Merck & Co., Novartis, Pfizer, Roche and Sanofi) recorded combined sales of $14.8 billion from products that have been approved as new molecular entities (NMEs) by the FDA since 2007.

BRIC shifting from emerging markets to giants! But market growth is not the saviour it was first thought...

The BRIC nations - Brazil, Russia, India and China - for so long the leading lights of the emerging markets movement, may soon need to relinquish their 'emerging' tag and become 'giants'.

10 tips for using social media to engage with customers - the pharma experience.

Internal challenges - and not regulatory ones - are the biggest barriers to better use of social media in pharma, according to a new survey of industry executives.

Elsevier to upgrade their journal websites for improved mobile functionality & better searching.

Elsevier, a word-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced a major investment in services provided to its society partners and individual readers.

If you love lists, best selling drugs of all time.

Earlier this year, FirstWord produced an analysis of the biggest selling prescription drugs of all time. This is an updated piece that incorporates 2012 full-year sales where applicable.

Should NICE have access to all the product licence data to make decisions? Government thinks yes & pharma thinks ...?

Arrangements need to be put in place to ensure that the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) can access all the evidence underlying product licensing decisions taken by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), says the National Audit Office (NAO).

Uk pharmacists get social media use guidance.

Pharmacists in the UK are being encouraged to use social media in their professional lives by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS).

Why would a generics company want to buy a branded drugs company? Actavis & Warner Chilcott purchase.

Confirmation on Monday that Actavis is to acquire Warner Chilcott in a stock-for-stock deal worth $8.5 billion comes as little surprise given that it emerged the two companies were in preliminary discussions last week.

When to use an app for patients - ideas to consider via Kevin MD

If I were asked "Why should a clinician prescribe an app?" I would answer as follows: Because it's likely to help the patient reach his or her most important health goals, and is a good fit within an over-arching medical management plan.

Apostrophe now: Bad grammar and the people who hate it

Bad grammar - does it offend you? When reviewing MI standard responses, I can't ignore incorrect punctuation! My pet hate is long sentences. What's your pet hate?

Children are again to be subject to a rigorous examination in grammar. But why does it make adults so cross when other adults break the rules?

SharonWho am I?

After leaving corporate life 7 years ago, I set up my own Medical Affairs consultancy and training business, believing that there wasn't much demand for either service.  Luckily, I proved myself wrong and now have a long client list from many large and small pharmaceutical companies.  I'm passionate about my business, Medical Information, social media, information to patients and all things geek.

I help busy managers succeed in their goals by
  • managing projects
  • training their staff on MI practice and leadership
  • mentoring managers new to Medical Information or Medical Affairs
  • helping them restructure their business

And now we build tools to monitor your customer's perceptions of your service.  You name it, I can probably do it.
