Greetings!

Spring has finally sprung here in Europe! Our spring flowers are late and the tree still bare but they are rapidly catching up. These lambs that live around me (see picture) are growing fast!
This mirrors my life - running behind and got lots to do! It's been a hectic few months as it's conference time. So what's been happening?
- DIA US Medical and Scientific Communication conference in Phoenix, Arizona. I chaired the Globalisation session, with Janet Davies, Gilead talking about the global worldwide survey we ran last year and Lesley Fierro, Sanofi talking about can you really globalise MI?
- The first residential course that I helped run on Coping with Corporate Life - a Mindfulness Approach. The delegates gave some fantastic feedback - see below. If you want to know how you can use mindfulness to cope with a busy stressful life, there's a Taster session is being run on Friday May 17th at Watford, just of the M25
- The usual project work: Global Medical Affairs training, final session of a management training course and some ongoing major projects
- My new social responsibility project. Donating my time & leadership/management skills to work with a charitable organisation to help them become even more effective - more about this next month!
- An exciting development..... more later this year!

This one-day taster session, run by Sue Weston and I, introduces a mindfulness approach to our busy working lives. Sue brings her unique enthusiasm, expertise and inspirational teaching to the day. She has been living and teaching mindfulness for many years so I am delighted to be associated with her.
Feedback from the weekend course: Valued: the wisdom of Sue and shared experience of the group. Opportunity for time out to gain an introduction to mindfulness. What you will take into your life: the changes I can make in my attitude can have a massive effect on me and those around me "A weekend of light-bulb moments and and introduction to techniques that will help me make positive changes to my life and those of others"

On the surface pharma Med Info looks easy but the reality is different like dancing in a minefield. We have innovative ideas but many obvious ones are illegal!
Pharmaceutical companies are in the medical information business. Pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies spend most of their resources on generating, compiling, interpreting, and disseminating medical information.

Demand for medical affairs input + recognized value > resources available. Great article on strategies to adopt.
The rising costs of drug development as well as heightened scrutiny of marketing practices evident over the past decade, are among a number of reasons leading to greater responsibility given to Medical Affairs departments, traditionally charged with shepherding clinical trials and publications.

Market Access in Europe & need for the right clinical evidence - nice overview article from PM Live.
New regulatory and reimbursement realities coming into force across Europe mean that better evidence of the value of new medicines is required to satisfy a complex network of stakeholders, each with their own priorities.

Mobile enabled website or apps? Or just a better website experience? Blog on this hot topic from Dose of Digital
One of the most interesting aspects of working in digital marketing is that the pace of innovation often overtakes conventional wisdom. By the time the white papers are written and an approach congeals across the industry, the recommendations therein may have been superseded by advances in technology.

MHRA feedback to EU commission on the failure of patient info leaflet to meet patient needs. Great overview of key issues from Pharma Times.
There is an increasing evidence base on how to effectively communicate information on the risks and benefits of medicines but, with a few exceptions, "the pharmaceutical industry has not kept pace with this in producing product information fit for the 21st century healthcare setting," says the UK government.

Review on the DIA webinar on the controversial US vs Caronia case on off-label "promotion"
On December 3, 2012, the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals vacated the conviction of former pharmaceutical company sales rep Alfred Caronia for promoting a drug for a use that had not been approved by the FDA. This is called off-label use.

Who am I?
After leaving corporate life 7 years ago, I set up my own Medical Affairs consultancy and training business, believing that there wasn't much demand for either service. Luckily, I proved myself wrong and now have a long client list from many large and small pharmaceutical companies. I'm passionate about my business, Medical Information, social media, information to patients and all things geek.
I help busy managers succeed in their goals by
- managing projects
- training their staff on MI practice and leadership
- mentoring managers new to Medical Information or Medical Affairs
- helping them restructure their business
And now we build tools to monitor your customer's perceptions of your service. You name it, I can probably do it.
