Sharon Leighton Consultancy                          November 2012

Greetings!

Wow! Lots of great digital content from November 2012.  You've been telling me that all things digital is the hot topic right now.  Mind you, I know that anything on technology grabs our interest.

A look at new technology in 1983 I recently found a 1983 AIOPI (now PIPA) reprint on New Technology.  Many of you were probably toddlers then, if you were even born!  What was 1983 like?  I worked in research labs so hadn't joined the information team at GSK, but just to remind you. The web wasn't in common use, email hadn't been adopted, there were no mobile phones and call centres certainly didn't feature in Europe or the US.

The surprising thing was that it pretty much described how we operate today.  Email, digitised clinical articles, touch screens, OCR, virtual working from home to name a few.  Surprising but also depressing.  Can we truly say we have fully embraced technological changes to transform our customer experience?

So I wonder what Medical Information will look like in 30 years time? Time to get out that crystal ball!

From my blog ... Impact on MedInfo: The European Pharmacovigilance Legislation

I had a great day with Cleo Fu in September running the PIPA 1st Steps in Pharmacovigilance course. She inspired me to finally write my thoughts on the impact of the EU Pv legislation on Med Info. What do you think? You can comment here or anonymously on the website.

If you haven't heard about the pharmacovigilance legislation changes in Europe, you must have been living on Mars. Come to think of it, I bet that Curiosity rover on Mars knows about it too, after all it tweets!

From my blog.....
Live Chat - a new channel for Med Info?

Can Live Chat be done well by pharma? A telecom network outage gave me the chance to explore how well it was done (or not!). Recent data from the DIA EU Medical Information & Communications track at Clinical Forum showed that customers haven't asked for it as a channel. But should that stop us considering it? None of us asked for an iPod or iPhone before they came out but many of us can't live without them!

Janssen Launches New Medical Information Tool

For updates on European sexy medinfo apps, I'm blogging about DIA meeting.

Janssen Scientific Affairs, LLC today announced the launch of JanssenMD™, a new online scientific resource for U.S. healthcare professionals seeking instant access to current information about Janssen products marketed in the U.S.

SOcial, LOcal, MObile and the impact for health information

Making location based content relevant to medinfo. Paul Grant Creation Healthcare's great blog on SoLoMo from DIA talk.

When Creation Healthcare was invited to once again speak on emerging channels at the 2012 DIA Clinical Forum, an audience of medical information colleagues witnessed an unorthodox and highly experimental presentation.

Won't somebody think of the users?

Pharma might create great content for patients but if they can't find it - boohoo :(

Sometimes I wonder whether pharmaceutical companies actually want people to find the online content they produce.

Less than half of UK healthcare professionals use mobile apps for work

44% of UK HCP use mobile apps. So is it the wrong apps or lack of demand? Yet diabetes nurses recommend apps to patients.

Despite the seeming ubiquity of smartphones, less than half of UK healthcare professionals use mobile apps to help them in their working lives, according to a new study.
Understanding the Factors That Influence the Adoption and Meaningful Use of Social Media by Physicians to Share Medical Information

US survey of doctors on use of online + social media for sharing medinfo.

Background: Within the medical community there is persistent debate as to whether the information available through social media is trustworthy and valid, and whether physicians are ready to adopt these technologies and ultimately embrace them as a format for professional development and lifelong learning.

Mobile Medline App Streamlines Data Search

Unbound medline app review - I love checking out Pubmed tools and aggregators.

Using visual search component, Unbound Medicine is hoping to transform the way physicians search for medical information through the federal government's Medline database.

Will Epocrates slowly become irrelevant in the iPad era?

With the lack of an Epocrates app, it's going to be left behind.

When Apple launched the App Store, Epocrates had a front seat at the table, and collaborated with Apple to make sure its software would be one of the first available for iPhone users.

Perception of pharma online 'negative'

Survey of patients - half view pharma as negative & want pharma to correct misinformation online. who wouldn't?

Pharma manufacturers must take to social media in a bid to correct misinformation about the industry and their products, according to a new survey from two digital experts.
Boehringer Pays $95M For Off-Label Marketing

Boerhinger gets $95m fine + CIA in US for promoting off label for unapproved use of Aggrenox Combivent etc

Yet another large drugmaker has reached a settlement with the feds for off-label marketing. The latest is Boehringer Ingelheim, which has agreed to pay $95 million to resolve charges of promoting several drugs for unapproved uses, according to the US Department of Justice.

France's New Framework for Regulating Off-Label Drug Use

Off label medicine use NEJM comment on the French TRU legal framework for authorising & controlling use

Off-label use of drugs is relatively common in medical practice, even if it's often not supported by strong scientific evidence. Studies in the United States have shown that off-label use may account for approximately 20% of prescriptions, or 150 million prescriptions per year.

Waiting for all the facts

So true! do you wait for all the info to be there before acting? Short blog from Seth Godin

"I'm just going to wait until all the facts are in..." All the facts are never in. We don't have all the facts on the sinking of the Titanic, on the efficacy of social media or on whether dogs make good house pets.

SharonWho am I?

After leaving corporate life 6 years ago, I set up my own Medical Affairs consultancy and training business, believing that there wasn't much demand for either service.  Luckily, I proved myself wrong and now have a long client list from many large and small pharmaceutical companies.  I'm passionate about my business, Medical Information, social media, information to patients and all things geek.

I help busy managers succeed in their goals by
  • managing projects
  • training their staff on MI practice and leadership
  • mentoring managers new to Medical Information or Medical Affairs
  • helping them restructure their business

And now we build tools to monitor your customer's perceptions of your service.  You name it, I can probably do it.
