There is a difference between being "thankful" and being "grateful."
Our lips are trained to say 'thank you' even if we don't feel thankful. We are just being polite. Gratefulness is a deeper emotion that springs from the realization that we probably don't deserve the blessings we enjoy or the mercy that we experience. I am so grateful for the unfathomable mercy and love of God.
Our most valuable treasure is a grateful heart. We are rich, not when we have what we want, but when we want what we have.
I've noticed that there is very little relationship between how much a person has and their degree of thankfulness and gratefulness.
The Apostle Paul says in Philippians 4:11-13
... for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
An ungrateful heart is like a black hole that can never be filled.
I think of the testimony of our MFI breakfast speaker, Nick Vujicic, who has accomplished so much for the Lord even though he was born without arms and legs.
Nick says, "If God can use a man without arms and legs to be His hands and feet, then He will certainly use any willing heart!" He's an author, musician, actor, and his hobbies include fishing, painting and swimming.
