Principal's Message:

It has been a lonely 17 days at Deal without our 1,300 students in the halls! The building has been refreshed (nothing like a good coat of wax to keep it shiny) and all of us are coming back ready for the next set of challenges. As you are no doubt aware, the new Reno Wing will be open and ready for business first thing Monday morning. Our custodial crew has been in all through the break (and on most weekends) getting everything in place with the construction company; our office staff has kept us up and running. Many of the teachers who are moving have been in as well, making sure that their classrooms and the transition is as smooth as possible.

We are very excited to be moving into some new space. There have been many questions about the space that have been answered on a case-by-case basis, but let me see if I can share some of the big ones that I have heard.

1) The new wing will have 15 classrooms, a couple of offices, an art space, and a multi-purpose room. The wing is made up of the historic Reno School (1903, National Register) and the not-so-historic building between Reno and the gym area of Deal (2015).
2) The Reno wing is integrated completely into the original Deal building; there are no exterior walkways needed to get to those classes. In a few years, the space will seem seamlessly part of Deal.
3) Teachers are aware that it is a long way to get to the classes in the Reno wing. We need to see how students move among the Deal spaces to see how we can ensure that everyone gets to class on time. For now, we will encourage students to move quickly (but with purpose) and be forgiving as we work out the traffic patterns.
4) The new wing is quite beautiful; the Reno building space is even more breathtaking than I had hoped. All exterior work, however, still continues as a muddy mess; new plantings will be put in during the late winter/early spring.
5) Students will not enter or exit the Reno wing through exterior doors; they will continue to enter and exit where they have normally exited.
6) Students have already moved their books into their new lockers; teachers' classrooms are already set up. Bathroom have been stocked.
7) There will be several historic displays authored by the Tenleytown Historical Society placed at critical locations in the Reno Wing. We will endeavor to integrate these into our curriculum (although DCPS middle school curricula don't necessarily cover school segregation nor the development of the Reno City area following the Civil War).
8) An elevator is still to be put in place. This will take some time over the next couple of months. Until then, no students with mobility needs will be required to go into the Reno Building. We will work as quickly as possible with the construction company and the elevator company to have the elevator in place as early as we are able.
9) There will be an open house to see the new space, tentatively planned for Thursday, January 29, from 6:30 - 8:00pm. While the Reno wing isn't a closed space before that, the open house should give us a chance to see it when it has had a few weeks to work out its kinks!

A quick reminder to families whose students ride the D buses. WMATA has indicated that they are starting to ask students to "tap" their DCOne cards when they enter the Metro buses. Students will need to have registered their cards online before they get on the bus in the morning. We were able to register many students before the break, but if your child was not able to take care of this then, a quick visit to the WMATA website should resolve any concerns. Please note that while this is an expectation of WMATA, they have also indicated that no students will be excluded from the bus if they don't have their cards registered. Also note that in February there will be a change to the D routes using Military Road; there will be no interruption in service but there will be a slight detour that will have the buses avoid the Military Road/16th Street intersection.

Have a great first week of 2015 and welcome back!

 Moving to the Reno Wing
On January 5th, we will fully occupy our new Reno wing. Teachers were busy over the break moving in to the new space and it looks beautiful! How does this affect your student?

1) Teams Addis Ababa and Brussels will be on the 1st and ground floors (respectively) of the new building.
2) Teachers will be moving in all parts of the Deal building, as new classrooms come open when we shift some over to Reno; virtually everyone will be affected so students will need to be aware of any location changes for their classes.
3) All Deal students will receive paper copies of their new schedules (with accurate class locations) in their homeroom Monday morning.
4) We will help to make sure that students feel they are able to move from class to class on-time when that journey is longer than in the past (we will be as flexible as possible).
