Principal's Message:
With Thanksgiving 2014 becoming a tasty memory in our past, we are now moving into three intense weeks in December. There are a number of activities to keep your eyes on before the Winter Break. Student mid-advisory reports will be coming out in a couple of weeks, there are some large field trips (8th grader Trolley Tour, 7th grade Natural History Museum), and our second round of Unit Assessments in English. Science Fair and National History Day (in 8th grade) continue as well over the next few weeks. The goal is to have rich instruction continue daily with all of this going on - and to let our students know that our goal is to challenge them with our best.
The school-focus of these weeks is tempered by some other great Deal events. We have held auditions for our latest Shakespeare Festival, schedule for the weekend of January 16. This will be the first time Deal students get to use the brand-new microphones purchases by the ADCA (nee PTA) from the proceeds of last year's Deal Auction. The first Deal Coffee House will take place fem 5 till 7 this Thursday, with many different types of acts on the stage. And next week will be the first concert of the season (new date: December 10) highlighting our choir and instrumental ensembles. Over the weekend we host another Scrabble tournament; if you have never seen one, it is especially exciting to watch. There will also be another debate competition on Thursday as well - our students are getting some excellent opportunities this year to practice their oratorical skills. Finally, we will participate in the Hour of Code next Monday, challenging as many students as possible to join our coders in the media center. Are your children in involved in one or more of these? If so, be sure to come out and watch them participate - you will always be glad that you did.
We are starting our registration for our winter session of Period 8 (see below). These classes have proven to be a successful addition to the world of Deal. We just completed a course called the Science of Happiness in which your middle school students participated in a college-level online class with the EdX program. The students who worked on this class were enrolled in the open course online and were supervised and supported by a Deal teacher. My guess is that there are many courses out there that are both appropriate and challenging for our students; this will be a rich area to continue to explore. This coming session we repeat our Forensic Science class. For this class, we team up with students at Kelly Miller Middle School to create virtual lab groups, with a culminating activity taking place at one or the other of the schools. This was a very popular class last year. If your child has never signed up for one of the Period 8 classes, this session starts at the beginning of January (we've stretched the season so that the schedules work for our students). If your child has already done a course, bring them back for another one! And, for the first time this year, Period 8 courses are open to 6th graders. Join in!
See you around the building!
James Albright
PS - Our appeal for the canned food drive paid off! Thank you to all who gave to their larger community. Our students brought in over 10,000 canned or non-perishable items as of Monday afternoon! These will be assembled by volunteers and delivered in the next week or so. Thank you for helping your children remember to bring in this food for someone else; it is surely and sorely needed.

New: Speech and Debate
On November 22nd, the speech and debate team attended their second high school tournament of the year. Over 400 students attended the tournament from throughout the DC/VA/MD metro area. Deal was the ONLY middle school in attendance and made a splash.
Zach Crouch received 5th place in Extemporaneous Speaking and is now able to compete in the high school national qualifying tournament in two different events. Quite an outstanding accomplishment given that many of the students that he competed against were seniors in high school.

Tim Berger (7th place)
