The Weekly Bulletin

Our school mission:
Alice Deal Middle School inspires excellence, curiosity, and compassion through intellectual and social engagement.
|
Principal's Message:
Thank you to all the families and students that responded to the mission of filling our stage with canned goods - the pace of can donations has picked up significantly. The final days for the drive are this week, so there is still time to get that last item in to Deal. Our 6th graders are getting ready to start their work with the National Coalition for the Homeless; I am looking forward to seeing how this experience affects their perspectives.
We had an amazing International Night on Wednesday. The Alice Deal Community Association (ADCA) made this a fun community event - and the community showed up! Silvia Dinale and Neha Shah did a wonderful job organizing this grand dinner, but couldn't have done it without the support of dozens of parents and cooks. It was a great way for Deal families to say thank you to our community. I heard many heartfelt appreciations for the Night; I am now looking forward to next year's model!
Our new building and renovated Reno School are almost ready to come on line. Teachers will start moving portions of their classrooms in the middle of December; students on Teams Addis Ababa and Brussels will relocate their lockers before the end of the year, and starting the 5th of January we will be in our new space. Deal's LSAT will host a "Reno open house" event sometime in late January to show families what the space looks like when fully occupied. I appreciate the community's patience with the water line work in front of Deal and onto Nebraska Avenue; it has made parking and pick-up/drop-offs a bit more challenging, but it is almost over. In the end, it will be all worth it - the new space is beautiful.
This weekend, our football team defeated McKinley Middle School for the Stripes Division DCIAA Championship under the leadership of Coach Neal Downing. Four years ago we began our first football season here at Deal - our home field is at Wilson, our competition more experienced teams from across the city. It is a tribute to all the coaches and athletes/scholars at Deal that our teams are well-organized and thoughtfully led, and that our students conduct themselves with pride and good sportsmanship whatever activity they are undertaking. Good things, like championships in volleyball, cross-country, and now football, are sure to follow!
Have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. Drive/walk/fly carefully, eat well, give thanks to all, and be generous in any way that you can.
James Albright
PS - Our attendance push continues. Thank you for making your child's attendance a priority. Every day counts - our teachers work hard to make every minute important and it works best when the students are in the building! Wednesday is a full school day - we will have a short assembly at the end of the day but classes will be in academic mode. Please don't pick up your students early if it can be avoided! We won't be able to pull them out of the auditorium in enough time to make it worth it - and if the weather is bad (a possibility) traffic is going to be a bit tighter than usual.
