Principal's Message...

The other night, right after a hugely successful Deal Gives Back, many Deal Vikings attended the Nationals game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The weather was perfect and the Nationals played well enough to win before the skies opened up. Chancellor Henderson threw out the first pitch and a colleague, Principal Zaki from Kelly Miller MS, handed the umpires the starting lineups. A quintessential Washington night.

This week promises to be a quintessential Alice Deal week as well. We will have some end of the year assessments, courtesy the PIA, for some of our students. Lockers will be cleaned and books returned. 6th graders still have a field trip or two to complete. Our 7th graders will meet a pair of Holocaust survivors. And on Friday, we close out the week with Deal Day and the 8th grader Dance. There is much more going on, of course - there are still two weeks of teaching to get in and the list above is not exhaustive (although it might be exhausting!).

The start of the week also contains a surprise. Last week, I sent a message to this community that representatives of the Westboro Baptist Church have set a time for a protest in front of Wilson HS. The protest is part of a larger number of activities the Church is conducting in opposition to DC's Pride Week. I am sure that many of you are also aware of the "coming out" statement from Wilson's Principal Cahall. The contrast of the intent of the protest and Pete Cahall's courageous action could not be any sharper. Many Wilson students have expressed interest in staging a counter-protest. In Principal Cahall's message to his community he stressed the importance of civil behavior towards our visitors; we know that as parents you would expect no less from your children at this challenging event.

There is a change in the plan for the protest. Rather than take place on the Fort Drive side of Wilson, the Church will be gathering at the corner of Nebraska and Chesapeake (in front of the new stone sign and adjacent to the football field). We will, therefore, not need to direct our students away from Ft. Reno as planned last week. Instead, Deal students will make their way as they regularly do - up Fort Drive and across Ft Reno. As I noted, there are bound to be some disruptions to driving and parking; please plan accordingly. To ensure your students' safety, Deal administrators will be placed along the walking route and at the bus drop-off. Students are expected to come to school on time, of course, but slight delays due to the traffic disruptions are to be expected and excused. If you and your student decide that they should be present at the counter-protest, please provide them with a note to that effect in advance on Monday. Notes later on in the week will not be accepted. Please make sure that your children understand this.

Of course, one can never really tell what will happen Monday morning. As always, we will plan for the disruption and address whatever changing circumstances dictate in the morning.

Enjoy the week.

James Albright

The program offers bi-weekly sessions during the school year, Monday through Saturday, and the summer months, Monday through Friday. The program is designed to provide comprehensive programming for our youth. Youth are incorporated into the program's design and decision-making, ensuring that they are empowered and invested in their program. Programming covers academic needs, leadership and team skill building, positive social engagement and healthy active lifestyles. Programming sessions include Youth Council, SAT prep, College prep, ESL, tutoring, peer process discussion groups, enrichment workshops (i.e., yoga, dance, cooking), and gender specific groups.

Right now, our recruitment is targeted specifically to Vietnamese American students.
