Student & parent information
Newly Announced: StepAfrika! this Thursday
All Deal students will be invited to enjoy a StepAfrika performance on Thursday (during either 6th or 7th period). StepAfrika has partnered with Deal this year to provide weekly training for students; their performance is sure to be spectacular.
New: Saturday Institute Starting this Saturday (February 15) a group of students will be invited to participate in our new Saturday Institute. The Institute will focus on reinforcing English standards from the Common Core, strengthening students' ability. Families will be contacted individually as well as receive a letter describing the Institute; the Institute will be tailored to individual students. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. More information on the Institute will be included in the letter of invitation. New: Science Fair Results Deal would like to thank the nearly 30 judges who braved wintry conditions last week to help make our annual Science Fair possible. Nearly 100 7th & 8th grade students competed at the school-wide level, showing off the culmination of months of hard work and inquiry. We congratulate all participants and are pleased to announce our winners. Grand Prize winners will represent Deal at the city-wide DC STEM fair in March. More information will be provided to these students via their science teachers. Please congratulate the 2014 Deal Science Fair Award Winners. New: GirlUp Greets the President of France on Tuesday Three representatives of Deal's GirlUp Club have been invited to help welcome the President of France to the United States at a special reception this Tuesday. Charley Mestrich, Ella Wiener, and Eliza Zizka will join a delegation to represent GirlUp's commitment to education and economic and political rights for girls around the world. Teachers are asked to please extend your congratulations to our young ambassadors and to excuse them from classes on Tuesday. New: GirlUp Dollar Campaign This Week The Deal GirlUp Club wants to send at least 12 girls to school next year, but that takes money. We are trying to raise $2160 to cover the cost of tuition, uniforms, and books for a whole year's schooling in Congo. We would love to send even more, but that requires a little contribution from each one of us in the Deal family. Each day the homeroom teachers will circulate a bag designated for donations. Each afternoon, our club members will count the donations and return the bag for the next day. We are happy to accept coins, bills, and checks payable to Deal MS. Please, if you can, contribute generously. Every single dollar is dedicated to funding a child's education. "You see a girl; we see the future." New: Speech and Drama Competition
Deal's 2nd Annual Black History Month Speech and Drama Competition will be held on Thursday, Feb. 27. The first place winner will receive $100, the second place winner will receive $75, and the 3rd place winner will receive $50 6th, 7th, 8th graders who are interested in competing MUST see Ms. Neal and Ms. Red during their lunch period on Tuesday. New: Weekend Debate Thanks A big thank you goes out to Stephanie Berger and all the debate team parents for their hard work and dedication to prepare food and spontaneously staff the weekend debate tournament. The resounding sentiment of all the coaches and school representatives in attendance was that not only did our Deal parents out-do themselves by feeding every judge and coach a hearty breakfast and lunch, but it was the first time in the history of the Urban Debate League that any school was willing to step up to the challenge. Additional thanks goes out to our ever-faithful parent debate judges who give up their time on a Saturday to listen and evaluate debaters for close to eight hours. This week a hearty thanks goes to Frank Medina (Claire) and Kiersten Stewart (Jamie). Students will present their research through one of five categories: research papers, exhibit boards, web sites, performances, and documentaries. National History Day is an international research competition, and Deal's students have earned quite a reputation for achievement. We would like to continue this tradition by sending another team of high performers to the contest in June. Cafeteria Composting Continues!
Deal Vikings have quickly taken to a new routine in the cafeteria, disposing compostable and recyclable materials separately from trash. Thanks to the hard work of student volunteers, the program now diverts almost 300 gallons of material from the landfill each day! Keep up the good work Vikings!
Attention All 2nd Semester 6th Gr Art Students!
All 6th grade students taking art in the second semester are reminded to bring in their unlined, 9x12 sketchbook with at least 50 pages. We will use these books regularly in class!

Calling all Ultimate Frisbee Players!

Yearbook/Newspaper pictures are requested!
Please email any pictures for the yearbook and/or the newspaper to Mr. Klauber at eklauber@gmail.com
The number one most requested item at homeless shelters is a pair of jeans. Do you have any that you've outgrown? Any that are no longer your style? Any that you think would brighten someone else's day if they could wear them? If so, please bring them in and donate them to Teens for Jeans in your homeroom. Last year, Deal students and staff collected 1,423 pairs of jeans. Our goal this year is 1,600. We will collect through February 13.
