Principal's Message...

Two recent articles in the Washington Post highlighted the civic-mindedness of your children - one on the 6th grade's work with the issue of homelessness and the other about the success this past week of our Student Council's petition for a bus shelter on Nebraska Avenue. Each in their own way reflects a growing commitment to community in keeping with the service learning component of our IB program. Children can be powerful advocates for change, especially change for those less able to fight. At any time there are a number of service activities going on at Deal, with little concern that students are doing "too much." This is the time (middle school) to help children learn how to take their natural instinct to help and turn it in to results. The impact may be small or large, but it can be very real. Sometime by the end of March a new bus shelter will be in place on Nebraska Avenue, keeping future generations of students and riders dry. Somewhere in the city someone will put on a clean pair of jeans for the first time in a long time. Small, but real.

We can both build community and serve community. Last night's Deal PTA Party and Auction (in that order) was tremendous fun. Hundreds came out to lounge in Deal's "Motown Room" - that secret club space with a huge dance floor, bright lights, DJs, and all the wings and chili you can take. Generous donors provided the auction items that formed one of the reasons for the evening; the dancing and loud music formed the other reason. This was truly a community building event of the first order. Special thanks to Cathy House and Anita Seline for leading us down the Soul Train path of this downright fun night. Once the dust has settled, we'll report out the results that will fund so much of what we do at Deal. Only around 365 days till the next one!

Here in the bulletin check out the list of students who will advance to the next round of the Science Fair. We really believe that the Fair is a great culminating event for science learning, and are very proud of the work that arises in this multi-month activity. This week also saw our latest foray in competitive debate - we'll have to wait a week to post those results.

Our report cards will be coming home on the 11th (Tuesday) due to the delay caused by that pesky snow. Keep in mind that Wednesday our students will be on a Test Bell, with a Paced Interim Assessment Test in English first thing in the morning. Math follows next week. The week culminates in a long weekend for your children, with a professional development day on Friday (for the adults in the building) and then the President's Day holiday on Monday.

Enjoy the relatively calm weather, but keep an ear tuned for any changes. Be sure to join our Twitter feed, where we will post new information as soon as we get it.

Take care.

James Albright

Last big push: We need more jean, jeans for teens! Our deadline for jean collection is the end of this week and we need more! Please send them in with your child or, if you want to drop them off, just include a note indicating child, their homeroom, and the number of jeans. Gently used, please!

Deal would like to thank the nearly 30 judges who braved wintry conditions last week to help make our annual Science Fair possible. Nearly 100 7th & 8th grade students competed at the school-wide level, showing off the culmination of months of hard work and inquiry. We congratulate all participants and are pleased to announce our winners. Grand Prize winners will represent Deal at the city-wide DC STEM fair in March. Charley Mestrich, Ella Wiener, and Eliza Zizka will join a delegation to represent GirlUp's commitment to education and economic and political rights for girls around the world. Teachers are asked to please extend your congratulations to our young ambassadors and to excuse them from classes on Tuesday.

New: GirlUp Dollar Campaign This Week

The Deal GirlUp Club wants to send at least 12 girls to school next year, but that takes money. We are trying to raise $2160 to cover the cost of tuition, uniforms, and books for a whole year's schooling in Congo. We would love to send even more, but that requires a little contribution from each one of us in the Deal family.

Each day the homeroom teachers will circulate a bag designated for donations. Each afternoon, our club members will count the donations and return the bag for the next day. We are happy to accept coins, bills, and checks payable to Deal MS. Please, if you can, contribute generously. Every single dollar is dedicated to funding a child's education. "You see a girl; we see the future."

New: Weekend Debate Thanks

A big thank you goes out to Stephanie Berger and all the debate team parents for their hard work and dedication to prepare food and spontaneously staff the weekend debate tournament. The resounding sentiment of all the coaches and school representatives in attendance was that not only did our Deal parents out-do themselves by feeding every judge and coach a hearty breakfast and lunch, but it was the first time in the history of the Urban Debate League that any school was willing to step up to the challenge.

Additional thanks goes out to our ever-faithful parent debate judges who give up their time on a Saturday to listen and evaluate debaters for close to eight hours. This week a hearty thanks goes to Frank Medina (Claire) and Kiersten Stewart (Jamie).

(This is a change from the NHD calendar provided at the beginning of the year)

New: Looking for National History Day Judges: March 11th

The Humanities 8 Team is looking for judges for our school's annual National History Day competition on March 11th. Parents and community members with some expertise in history, journalism, archival work, museum studies, and film production would qualify for this important task. Students will present their research through one of five categories: research papers, exhibit boards, web sites, performances, and documentaries. We need panels of evaluators to review and score student achievement.

National History Day is an international research competition, and Deal's students have earned quite a reputation for achievement. We would like to continue this tradition by sending another team of high performers to the contest in June.

If you have the time and interest in helping us with our school level competition on Tuesday, March 11th please contact Cynthia.mostoller@dc.gov ASAP.

The number one most requested item at homeless shelters is a pair of jeans. Do you have any that you've outgrown? Any that are no longer your style? Any that you think would brighten someone else's day if they could wear them? If so, please bring them in and donate them to Teens for Jeans in your homeroom. Last year, Deal students and staff collected 1,423 pairs of jeans. Our goal this year is 1,600. We will collect through February 13.

Requesting Recommendations for Private Schools

1.  Who to ask? Start by thinking of which teachers can attest to your strengths and positive attributes. Some schools require specific subject teachers to write the recommendation so be aware of this before you ask.

2.  Gather the recommendation forms and fill out all pertinent information. Prepare an addressed and stamped envelope for each school from which you are requesting a recommendation. All recommendations will be placed in the mail by the individual teacher or by your counselor.

3.  Take the recommendation form with the envelope to the person from whom you need the request. Ask the person if they would be willing to write a recommendation for you. Remind them of the date by when it needs to be completed and mailed in. Please give the teacher two weeks to complete your recommendation. Ms. McFarland has copies of "Letter of Recommendation Request Forms" and "Student Profile Sheets" that are helpful for  this process.

If you need a transcript to send to a private school, please provide Ms. McFarland an addressed and stamped envelope to use to mail your transcript.

Capitol City Little League:

Baseball and Softball Registration is Currently Open

Registration for the Capitol City Little League (CCLL) is currently open for all children who live or go to school in the CCLL area.  For more than twenty-five years, CCLL has provided boys and girls in our community with a fun environment in which to learn the fundamentals of baseball and softball, while playing on a team comprised of other kids of similar age and skill level.  The league encourages all children to participate, learn the game, build their skills, and have a fun with current and new friends.  The CCLL season begins in late March and continues through early June.  You can register your child to participate at:

https://active.leagueone.com/Olr/Pages/Welcome.aspx?ClubId=13265

Early bird registration will be open until February 1, 2014. Those registering by February 1 will receive a $25 discount. Those who register between February 2 and February 16, 2014 will pay the basic rate.  Those registering on or after February 17, 2014 will be charged a $25 late fee.  Registration for all divisions (except the National Division) closes on March 1, 2014 and no registrations will be accepted after that date.  This firm deadline is necessary to ensure that the league can keep team sizes at an appropriate level so all kids get enough playing time, to recruit coaches, and to secure field space.  We look forward to a terrific Spring 2014 season and hope that your daughters and sons will participate.
