Principal's Message...Monday Update
Today, the Deal staff and student community returned to the building after a very long weekend. I spoke with the staff in the morning about what types of student needs we might find and what to do during the day. During our whole-school announcements, we reflected about the tragedy in Connecticut; I let students know that the adults in the building were there to be supportive. During the day, we paid attention to the details, and by the end of the day made plans to come back tomorrow.
For some time, we have been planning a "lockdown" drill for tomorrow morning. The drill will be a "narrated" drill, meaning I will announce the drill, clarify teacher and student expectations, and then have my administrative and security team conduct the drill. Following the drill, we will also conduct a planned fire drill (something we do every month). Both of these drills will take place during homeroom time tomorrow (although previously conducted drills have taken place at other times during the school day). Further drills are planned each month.
Finally, I would like us to recognize that Deal is a busy place; parents dropping off lunches, families making trips to the nurse's office, DCPS staff coming for meetings. As visitors come in the building we ask that, in addition to signing in at the security station, parents come only to the Welcome Center to be received. This will allow the office staff to make sure that all visitors are well-served and that we can notify teachers or others that they have a guest.
Thank you for support.
