"All organizations start with WHY, but only the great ones keep their WHY clear year after year."                  ~ Simon Sinek

Begin and End with "Why"

If you've ever spent much time around young children, you quickly learn they love to ask, "Why?"

"Why is the sky blue?"
"Why are my eyes green?"

"Why" is an easy word to learn and repeat and asking it gets them lots of attention. More importantly, it's because that's how children learn about their world. Then we go to school, where we learn more about who, what, where, when and how, and less about why. Noted educator Neil Postman remarked, "Children enter school as question marks and leave as periods."

Simon Sinek reminds us that success starts with asking "Why?"

A good board member can easily articulate what your organization does, when, for whom, where and how. A great board member can explain why it does what it does.

You operate an after-school mentoring program at an elementary school. Why? Because a child who is behind in school in the third grade has a higher risk of dropping out.

You provide free tax preparation services. Why? Because helping low income families claim all allowable credits increases their ability to save or pay bills, enabling them to become more financially stable.

Your organization provides services to persons with disabilities. Why? Because you envision a world in which all individuals with disabilities are fully included in their community.

Being able to articulate the why of what you do engages volunteers, staff, and donors.

Finally, when board members ask why it helps the organization fulfill its mission. Why are we making this decision? Why does that fit with our mission?

This month, check out a new free tool to clarify board, staff, and executive roles with a handy self-assessment (see link, left).  Plus, look for "Board's Tip Sheet for small-mid size organizations" thanks to our partnership with National Council of Nonprofits.

Always asking why,
