Club Racing News

By Eileen Waters

(This has been compiled from several resources.)

It's the end of the season and the MiDiv Pointskeeper Rocky Entriken has sent out his year end reports for both National racing in MiDiv and the Mid-Am Championship. I, in turn, use his stats to compile the "St. Louis" stats for a number of different purposes that I have. (When I speak of SCCA stats I often don't distinguish between St. Louis Region and Southern Illinois Region........what I'm often providing is SCCA stats for the St. Louis motorsports community.......therefore I don't separate them out by the two regions we're fortunate to have.)

Within the Midwest Division (MiDiv) there's both National racing and the Mid-Am Championship. This season wrapped up 50 years of National racing in MiDiv. There's one more year left before the SCCA switches to their new U.S. Majors Tour for the top tier of Club Racing in 2014. You'll find details online at U. S. Majors Tour.  The latest press release is available online and information is available on the revised point structure

Over those 50 years the division's National racers have earned 85 National (Runoffs) Championships and won 1168 divisional championships in 74 different classes. Locally 13 of our area road racers have earned 22 National titles at the Runoffs. Brad Stout has five and Terry McKenna four to lead the way (McKenna won two of his in the same day in 1982). There are 114 area road racers that have earned 280 MiDiv National titles with Chris Albin leading at 20. Jim Boehm has 12, Mark Weber 11, and Brad Stout nine. A total of 53 local drivers have won more than one MiDiv National title! These racers have won at least one MiDiv National title each year since 1963! Their best year was 2006 when they brought home 12 MiDiv titles.

This season there were 24 divisional champs (out of a possible 29). Congratulations to our Jim Wright in his Swift DB4 for capturing his second consecutive Formula Atlantic Midwest Division National Championship.

A total of 22 area racers participated in MiDiv National racing. Entries were up by 234 throughout the division, but there were six additional races this year from 2011. Here's how the rest of the St. Louis area road racers fared in the trophies.

In Formula 500 there was a huge battle between Charles McAbee Jr., of the Kansas Region, and our own Jack Walbran. The top four competitors in this class started 26 in division races and over 30 out-of-division events. Walbran's four wins to McAbee's nine earned him a hard fought second place just nine points back.

St. Louis Region's Brian Shafer captured third in the Spec Racer Ford class behind Grayson Strathman of the Kansas Region. Strathman was third in points when he attended the final races at Motorsports Park Hasting in Nebraska and the leaders ahead of him didn't. He was able to pick up his only two wins in 2012 and his second title by seven points. Shafer had two wins at Mid-America Motorplex (MAM).

You needed the General Competition Rules (GCR) to figure out F Production this year, specifically who had the most wins (the tiebreaker). There was a tie for first and a tie for third. Kansas Region's Eric Prill won over Ozark Mountain's Sam Henry based on his 11 wins to Henry's 7. Southern Illinois Region's Chuck Mathis finished in third thanks to his win at Gateway Motorsports Park. He was tied with Northeast Oklahoma Region's Randy Wagner.

Despite having two more wins Chris Albin finished second in H Production to Ozark Mountain's Jack Schulz who ran and scored points in one more race than Albin. Aaron Johnson, also of Southern Illinois, finished third.

Trophies in the MiDiv I.T. Tour series locally went to Chris Albin who finished second to Nebraska's Ralf Lindow in Improved Touring B (ITB). Lindow had one additional event that counted toward the trophies which earned him an extra seven points to take the title. St. Louis' Curt Faigle also brought home the silver over in Improved Touring 7 (IT7) as Kansas City Region's Ben Wolf won one more race than Faigle's three.

Chris Albin won the MiDiv Driver of the Year honors in 2012. There was a three-way tie in the points this year. Albin was the only Mid-Am driver with seven wins which helped him earn his 13th Driver of the Year award. The award has been presented 41 times and local racers have won it 18 times.

Moving to the Mid-Am Championship Chris Albin has for the last 20 years (yes, two decades!) been the ONLY champion in the ITB class! Congratulations on a very impressive record! (He's also earned 20 MiDiv National titles: 14 in ITB, four in G Production and two in H Production.)

Local trophy winners included a pair of silver medalists; Mark Morhaus who captured second in Spec Racer Ford and Curt Faigle who repeated his second in IT7 in the Mid-Am.

The Mid-Am added five races this season, but saw a drop in entry by 186.

Since 1972 local racers have brought home at least one Mid-Am title in every year except 1985. Not surprisingly Chris Albin leads the way with 21 Mid-Am titles (the other one coming in G Production) followed by Mary Daly with seven behind the wheel of a GT-1 Camaro. All together 111 different area drivers have earned 175 Mid-Am championships and 29 of them own more than one.

Solo Report

By Jan Rick

St. Louis Solo Series Events 11 & 12 in Blytheville, AR - October 27,28, 2012

October will be the final 2 series events of the St. Louis Series and will be held in Blytheville, AR at a HUGE area of concrete. Don't miss the fun on Oct. 27, 28, 2012. Sign up now at Motorsportsreg or use this link.

T-Shirts for attendees for this event.

Joining forces with Evolution Performance Driving Super Shootout Program the SCCA National Solo program will be doing the event a little differently than a traditional National Tour. Each driver will receive 4 runs on Saturday and will effectively be a 1 day National Tour. The following day those that are in the Top 32 PAX for the event will be qualified for the Tournament bracket. Everyone else will receive two more runs as a "Lance Chance Qualifier (LCQ)." The Top 16 in PAX from the LCQ will then also be qualified for the Tournament bracket. Those 64 will then battle each other to be the top eliminator. Want more info? Click on this link.

So join the St. Louis Region Traveling Circus to all go down to the Arkansas Aeroplex and play with the cones on some fantastic concrete. Each day counts as a St. Louis Region Series Point Event and you will be scored for STL point only against other STL drivers for points. Plus you will get to autocross with some of the nation's top drivers.

A discussion regarding the format of the event and the STL series point's events was held by the members of the Solo Advisory Committee on Sept. 12 and it was decided to count each day as a points event for the series. They decided to just go with the National Tour Format and count the 2 runs on Sunday for each as an event.

Saturday after runs all Region members and anyone else you wish to invite are going to meet at the Grecian Steak House at 1600 Main Street. Now there are 2 (yes 2) Greek Restaurants in Blytheville and they are next door to each other. The one we are meeting at is the one on the left. They serve very reasonable and affordable food and have a nice salad bar. We once asked if they are related to each other and the waitress stated "They ain't no kin". On Sunday after the event is over we all start home and stop for dinner at Lamberts in Sikeston to throw some rolls and eat at this famous southern Missouri spot.

A big thanks to our 2012 Sponsors Wavesco and Solo Perfromance Specialties. Please support thank them for supporting our fun!

Gateway Road Tour2 - November 9, 10 & 11, 2012

Then the SCCA National Road Tour comes to Gateway on Novembers 9,10,11 with the Gateway-Road Tour2. Last year this road course tour was held in Nashville on the road course at Nashville Speedway. This year it is will be held on the Gateway Motorsports Park road course. As a national tour is should attract people from all over. This is a different type of event for St. Louis and you won't want to miss it. Carla Russo is event chairman with Jan Rick and they know how to hold one great event. So don't miss this one either!

The garage spaces will be FOR RENT with a donation to SCCA Foundations for the SCCA Tire Rack Street Survival Program

St. Louis Region SCCA - 2012 Election

(Candidates, by office, are listed in alphabetical order.)

Candidates for Regional Executive

Cesare Venegoni

I have been a member of the St Louis Region for almost 18 years and currently I am serving as your 2012 Regional Executive. I would like to continue as your RE in 2013. As 2012 Regional Executive I've been successful in earning the respect and trust of many of you. As promised in last year's election I have been fair, above board, and open minded. I have always kept the members' best interest in mind. My goals for 2012 were to have well attended and fun events and to get more members involved with the management of the region. I feel I have been reasonably successful and would like to continue building on what I've started.

The Region's only major setback and challenge this year was in our Club Racing program. The economy and the temporary closing of Gateway International hit Club Racing a staggering blow in 2012. Poor turnout for the May event cost Club Racing dearly. The program's large financial loss and poor car count led to the canceling of our July event. Acting fast and with the help of a very able Board of Directors and many of you, I led a series of open meetings that would lead to the Region's taking a new long-term approach on how we could revive and improve Club Racing in the future. Planning for a successful 2013 season and beyond is now moving forward. I'm very excited about the approach we are taking and would like to be re-elected as RE so I can help get the job done. That's why I'm asking you to vote for me as your 2013 Regional Executive.

Peter Zekert

Active in SCCA since 1976, as a crew member for Bob Hubbard, F-Prod racer. [Bob was one of my early mentors.]

I became an SCCA member in 1982, attending driver's school in 1982 and progressing to a National License in 1983.

National License holder since 1983. Now a lifetime SCCA member.

GTLite National Champion 2008.

Member (at one time) in various regions across the US: St. Louis, Cal Club, San Francisco region, Kansas City region, and Atlanta region.

Received the 1994 Award of Merit by the SCCA Competition Board for the Revitalization of GT5.

Mentor to small GT racers since 1992, owning over 20 GT cars that I have loaned out to members for drivers schools, regionals, and national races.

Served 10 years on the GT Advisory Committee and was responsible for adding the Advisory Boards into the GCR.

Past St. Louis SCCA Board Member in the mid-1990s.

Currently working as a contract trainer to the US Dept. of State and for US Special Forces troops.

Candidates for Assistant Regional Executive

Steve Slotten

Florissant (North County) resident for 40 years. In the past I have been a Club Racing worker--Pit Chief for five years at Mid-America Raceway and St. Louis International Raceway. I have participated in Autocross (Solo). Currently participate in the Rallycross program as a driver and Safety Steward. I served on the BoD as a Member-At-Large for two years.

Chuck Udell

I am a retired Marketing Executive from a St. Louis Fortune 500 Company and a 25-year member of SCCA. I have been involved in racing since I was 13 when I began racing Go-Karts back in Pennsylvania. In the 1970's I sat on the Board of Directors of the Corvette Council of Western Pennsylvania, headquartered in Pittsburgh. During that time, with the help of my wife Bonnie, we took their autocross program from 35 cars to cutting them off at 100. Mind you, these were all Corvettes! When they were available, we also competed in "SCCA" SOLO events. In the 80's I moved up to running SOLO ONE, which we now we call PDX. We moved to St Louis in 1990.

While still in Pittsburgh, I had been introduced to Road Racing and became a card carrying member of SCCA. I crewed on a Formula Atlantic for one of my neighbors. So, when we arrived here and found out there was a Road Course right across the river, I had to have a "Real Race Car"! Well almost! I say that because the first person that I met at the "OLD Gateway" was Mark Weber! So my fate was sealed! With Mark's guidance I set my sights on getting a "Spridget" and going racing. For those of you that don't know a "SPRIDGET" is, it's either an Austin Healey Sprite or an MG Midget. Basically a GO-Kart with fenders! In 1992, along with my new friend Huey Strong, Bob Eichelberger's father-in-law, we went racing in an MG Midget. I did my first Driver's School right here in St Louis and followed that up with a second at Mid Ohio. "Back in the day," as they say, it actually took TWO Driver's Schools to get your Regional License. After a couple of tries I won the Mid Am Championship in our Spridget and then moved up to run Nationals and take my shot at the Run Offs. I just sold the F Production Miata that I built with help from Mike Wolf and Tim Finley and raced for the past ten years! I have now retired from driving but still like the smell and sound of a Race Car.

In addition to what I mentioned above, when I was much younger I helped operate a Drag Strip and more recently helped our son start up a Competition Karting business that operates in conjunction with a "Country Club Road Course" in Texas.

But, more importantly, I recently volunteered to be your Club Racing Chair. In this new capacity I have been working with the existing BOD to bring Road Racing back to Gateway. We tentatively have three Race Weekends scheduled at Gateway for 2013.

In closing, I believe that one of the things that makes SCCA different from other Car Clubs is the depth and breadth of our events and varying interest and talents of our membership. So, if you choose to vote for me, I will do my best to support all facets of our Region, be it SOLO, PDX, Road Rally, Rally Cross or Road Racing!

Candidates for Secretary

Eileen Waters

I've been part of the St. Louis motorsports community for almost 40 years now and over 30 of that has included the St. Louis Region of SCCA. I became hooked when, as the youngest of six, two of my brothers built a stock car.   Being the inquisitive teenage sister, I wanted to understand what they were doing. Since then, I've done a little of just about everything except mechanical work on a racing vehicle.

I have been increasingly more and more involved in the St. Louis motorsports community. I started grandstand scoring, wrote press releases, joined a local motorsports radio talk show, became a track scorer, served as an officer of the St. Louis Auto Racing Fan Club, wrote columns in two local publications, announced an eclectic mix of events, worked at St. Louis International Raceway (one of Gateway's earlier names), written road rallies, organized Oldtimers events, served on the 100 Acre Wood performance rally committee, co-chaired events, served as a honorary starter for a NASCAR Craftsman Truck race, been chosen as an inaugural member of the St. Louis International/Gateway International Drag Racing Hall of Fame, shared a St. Louis Region road rally title (thanks to the navigational skills of my oldest daughter), designed a program to teach students how they use every subject in school as a racer and became a St. Louis motorsports historian in addition to attending and volunteering at numerous racetracks across the country. As a race fan I promote every form of motorsports in St. Louis to anyone anywhere.

Currently, I am a St. Louis Auto Racing Fan Club board member and a columnist for their newsletter Trackside, a track scorer for the Allied Auto Racing Association (which conducts races at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, IL and Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely), editor of St. Louis Region's newsletter Wheelspin, and a columnist for our national publication, SportsCar. I have two daughters in college, volunteer with nine different organizations (from the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival to a USA Swim Team), and I've "gone back to school."

I have always believed that "we all go farther faster when we work together". I can see this slate of candidates working to continue the tradition of fun, well-led, innovative and successful events that our region is known for around the country, and I'm interested in bringing my expertise to the table to help lead St. Louis Region to an even brighter future. If elected as Secretary, I think my years of experience in just about every end of St. Louis motorsports imaginable will help forge mutually beneficial bonds between us and other St. Louis organizations, exposing a whole new group of people to the family that is St. Louis Region, and I'd appreciate your vote.

Lynn Wilson

I have been a member of St. Louis Region since 2004.  This is my second time in the SCCA.  I was a member of the Colorado Region for many years in the 70's and 80's.  I held a National Flagging and Communications license for several years until a new job which required me to travel most of the time prevented me from attending any races.  I also participated in autocross with a small and now defunct club in Southern Colorado.

In 2003, I changed to a position which no longer required me to travel.  I attended a couple of the Region's Solos that year and got hooked.  And not just on the Solos, but the people.  I started with a Mercedes coupe, and now have a Solo Vee, but in between I was fortunate to be able to co-drive a couple of Subarus.  I have been a member of the Solo Activities Committee for several years.  I have also been a member of the PDX committee and worked those events.  My weekend work schedule precludes my helping at the Club Races.  Thank you for your vote.

Candidates for Treasurer

William (Bill) Schnardthorst

I am submitting my name as a candidate for Treasurer for the upcoming BOD election.

I joined the St. Louis Region SCCA in 2003 when I purchased a Nissan Sentra Spec V and wanted someplace I could drive it the way it was designed to be driven. Since then I have had an F Prepared RX7, and currently run an RX8. I recently participated in my first PDX and fully intend to participate in more of them.

My SCCA experiences include Solo Chair, where I instituted the first member survey asking for member input on our program and suggestions for improvements. We also improved our registration process during this time and reorganized several areas of work assignments in order to improve the overall Solo experience for our members.

I am the current Treasurer and, while Treasurer, we have consolidated all bank accounts in the same bank to ensure easier reconciliations and access for both Solo and the Region. I have worked closely with our accounting firm to resolve such issues and stopped billing for charge card processing accounts that were no longer being used or needed, resulting in good savings for the Region. I have worked to improve the response times for all bill payment and region expense reimbursement requests. I worked with the Club Racing Committee to help them reduce registration expenses through the use of PayPal and Square processing.

I had been Solo Chief of Waivers for 4 years and had gotten that job down well enough that I normally had all of my job assignments filled well before the day of the event and always had backups lined up should anything unforeseen happen.

In my paying job, my duties mainly focus on my ability to solve difficult customer problems and complaints. This is accomplished by thinking out of the box, organizing an action plan, and recruiting the needed technical resources to accomplish the action plan. These technical teams may be from many areas within my company and across many geographical areas anywhere in the world. I believe this experience will allow me to help contribute needed guidance and organization our club will require in the uncertain times ahead. This experience will help me be better able to work across all programs in order to get the best possible overall teams put together to further the clubs needs and future.

Lynn Wilson

If not elected Secretary, I will run for Treasurer. (See bio under Candidates for Secretary above.)

Candidates for Member at Large

Tom DeYoung

Hello, my name is Tom DeYoung and I'm running for a Member at Large position on the BOD. I've been an SCCA member since 2009 and a member of the Solo Advisory Committee since 2011. It is my goal to help our Region membership grow. It is also my goal to more of our existing membership involved in the leadership of our Region.

Charlene Lain

My name is Charlene Lain, and I would like to be one of St. Louis Region's Members at Large. Born a gearhead, I have become more involved in the St. Louis racing scene over the past three years, and I feel that becoming a Member at Large is the right next step for me.

My volunteer positions with St. Louis Region have included Assistant Chair of the Gateway Kickoff, Food Chair of the May 2012 Club Race, 2011 Season Banquet Chair, and staffing the Tech-o-Rama. I have also been involved with the Club Racing Committee for two years and am currently working on marketing for that group. In addition to my work with the SCCA, I have helped market several track days for Gateway Motorsports Park, and I am an active member of the St. Louis Auto Racing Fan Club having, amongst other things, helped them promote their organization. I've been fortunate enough to visit all the tracks in Midwest Division. I have attended Chump Car, PDX, Solo, Club Racing events, and competed in several Road Rallies in addition to partaking in numerous other track events from Track Days to "The Runoffs."

In addition to my racing experience, I have served in one of three elected Trustee positions for the privately owned subdivision I lived in, holding that position for nine years; been a Field Claim Supervisor at MetLife for the past fifteen years; and I am also in my second term as a Notary Public. These positions, when added to my motorsports and volunteer history, have given me a lot of experience I feel will be helpful if I am elected as a Member at Large.

It is my belief that the purpose of any Board of Directors is to represent its membership. That is where I want to direct my efforts. Being a newer member of the Region, I hope to bring new ideas and initiatives along with the experience I have garnered along the way. My efforts will be for the good of the whole club and its membership. Let's get some new folks to join us, go racing, and have a blast doing it!

Tire Rack Street Survival School

Street Survival New 2012 Logo By Chuck DeProw and Jan Rick

Sept. 29th ended the season for the 2012 Street Survival.  We had 37 students; the largest group we have ever had.  This event implemented several new things to Street Survival.  We had instructors' training for all new instructors.  This was accomplished by the new instructor riding with the advanced instructor and the student.  Each new instructor got to listen and watch as the student was talked thru the exercise.  This year the sessions were in two halves.  We had an A/B group of the students.  With the number of students trying to get into the school, it looks like the A/B sessions may be the future of Street Survival.

The entire Street Survival Committee wants to say a big thanks to all the work Carla Russo has done for this program.  Carla has been our registrar for a number of years, but due to her heavy work load, she has decided to take a small and well deserved break from Registrar work. Carla, thanks again for all you have done for this program.

Susan Anderson has graciously offered to take on the duties of Registrar and comes with some great experience as the Registrar for Rally America's 100 Acre Wood event.

Many Instructors were trained this last event and they were all great additions to the program. Thanks to all of them.

Our sponsors are always appreciated. Tire Rack, Enterprise, Solo Performance Specialties and LKQ. We couldn't do all this great work without them!

One parent from this session wrote us and said "Thanks to you and the MANY volunteers who made Street Survival School possible for our kids!  My daughter Hunter gained tremendous benefit from all the exercises she was put through.  We both know she is a better driver for it."

I think the photos say it all!

appearance.  He finished eighth in his event and holds the SCCA record for having competed in the most "Runoffs".  He ran his first "Runoffs" in 1982 and through 1993 ran in only a single class.  Since 1994 until this year he competed in two classes by using the same car and swapping engines.  One year, 2002, he competed in three classes!  He celebrated by presenting Dave Rollow with a commemorative helmet and Duck Waddle with a SCCA Jacket at the Worker of the Year festivities at the "Runoffs".  Rollow and Waddle had each worked more than 43 of the 49 "Runoffs".

2012 Bob Hubbard induction plaque

The late Bob Hubbard, a former region member, was inducted into the Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame this fall.  He was one of seven inductees and the only sports car racer in the 15th class inducted.  His sister, Margie McMurphy accepted the honor on Hubbard's behalf.  The Hall of Fame is located inside the Museum of American Speed on the Speedway Motors complex in Lincoln, NE.

Here's an article on Hubbard from the Nebraska Region's newsletter Exhaust Notes.

Robert Hubbard (SCCA)
by Lee Ackerman

Robert Keith Hubbard was born on March 19, 1934 in Wymore, Nebraska. His family moved to Kansas in either 1938 or 1939. He would later attend Kansas State University graduating with a mechanical engineering degree. On September 2, 1956 he married his wife Thelma in Colby, Kansas. Bob spent 4 years in the Air Force.

He started racing in 1959 while still attending Kansas State University.  His first race was in Oklahoma in a Porsche Speedster. He would later move to a Sardini Formula Vee and then to a MG Midget.

In his years of racing Bob would win 8 MiDiv National Championships. In 1964 & 1965 in the Formula Vee Class, first in a Formcar and then in a Sardini. He would later win six F production championships all in MG Midgets. His championships in F production came in 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981.

Bob would find his way to Columbia, Missouri where he operated Autosport, an MG-Jaguar dealership later adding Truimph and Mazda. This is where he prepped his MG Midgets.

He was SCCA National License Chairman for many years and issued Al Unser, Jr. his first license. In the 1960's Bob became an instructor at SCCA Driving School, a position he held for many years. In the early 70's he started participating in the SCCA steward program in the St. Louis area. Bob was a member of the SCCA from 1959 until his passing in 1999.

Dan Layton and Mark Weber wrote a remembrance of Bob after his passing in the St. Louis Region's "Wheelspin." It started out like this, "Everyone has a teacher that they remember for the rest of their life for us it was Bob Hubbard."

They would continue, "We were the politically opposite of Bob, but we would sat at the feet of this mechanical guru as he quietly put his race car together. We'd show up in the evening at the race shop and get put to work. The lessons continued, not in any structured form. Bob led and taught by example and sooner or later, over time, it all soaked through our thick heads. We learned there is no substitute for preparation, long hours and hard work. That 'good luck' is usually the result of all that and 'bad luck' the result of a failure to prepare. We learned that nothing is as satisfying as
accomplishing something difficult, that the secret of becoming good at almost everything is practice, practice, practice. We learned that the toughest job-building a new race car up from a bare sheet metal body-in-white, repairing a big wreck-all begin with just a twist of a wrench or the first bend in a piece of sheet metal."

Rocky Entriken remembers taking a number of SCCA Driver Schools and he remembers Bob, "I have often told others that Bob could teach more with a hand signal from trackside than other instructors could in a 10 minute lecture."

One of people's fondest memories of Bob is his run at Elkhart Lake in 1980. After catching the engine on fire on Saturday, he came Sunday and got permission from the Chief Steward to start last. "I'm going to let you start because you're a National driver with a lot of experience. So, son, get your race in and don't try anything- you can't win from there." The Chief Steward told Bob. After the race which Bob stormed through the field and won, the Chief Steward went to the pits and personally congratulated him.

Eventually, Bob would close Autosport and start another aspect of his racing career. In 1982 he went to work for Race Beat in California. In 1983 the Race Beat Mazda won the GTO class at the 24 hours of Daytna and finished third overall.  They also won at Mosport park.

The next year he moved to Raleigh, NC and went to work for Team Highball in IMSA
competition. He helped develop the Mazda GLC for IMSA ProFormance racing (Champion Spark Plug Challenge).  The GLC went on to win the 1985 Drivers Championship for Dennis Shaw and the Manufacturer's Championship for Mazda.  Bob was named the IMSA Champion Spark Plug Challenge Mechanic of the year.

During this same time period Bob working at Team Highball helped to build and develop the first tube frame IMSA GTU RX-7 in January 1985.  The car went from a stack of tubing to winning it's first race, the Daytona @24hours, in 30 days.  He was crew chief for four Daytona 24 hour GTU class wins in 1985, 86, 87, and 88 and a GTU class win at the Sebring 12 hours in 1988 with that same car.  Bob remained at Team Highball until the end of 1989.

Dennis Shaw remembers Bob from from the Team Highball days.  "I had the upmost respect for Bob. He taught me so much. He did it in a way that I didn't know I was
being taught."

Shaw goes on to say, "Bob's efforts and others helped Mazda win the Manufacturers Championship in 1985, 1986 and 1987.  The car that Bob help us win Dayton 24 hour championships in '85, '86, '87 and '88 would win again in 1990.  I know of no other single car that has won five Daytona 24 Hour titles."

For several years in the early 90's Bob worked for Jack Beck at Orion
Engineering in Omaha helping to prep race cars.

Longtime SCCA Member Frank Grover worked with Bob at Orion and remembers Bob this way, "Bob was best in his machine shop where no mill or lathe project seemed beyond his skills. As we worked in close proximity he was always showing me his latest project or providing a guiding light on a task that seemed beyond my skills."

In 1999, Bob was diagnosed with liver cancer and passed away on June 2,
1999.
