Bainbridge Dance Center is proud to announce our 33rd Annual Student Performances. Professional training coupled with dancers who are devoted to their art equals an incredible set of performances! Dancers ages 4-18 will perform in ballet, modern, jazz, and tap techniques. In addition, our Advanced Ballet Repertory dancers will perform "The Sleeping Beauty Suite," a 40-minute version of one of the most well-loved ballets, which has been performed for over 100 years.

Our Advanced Tap and Advanced Modern Repertory dancers will perform three other significant pieces of choreography which have been acquired for the inclusion in our performances. First, is "Rainbow Etude" choreographed by Donald McKayle, which was based on his work "Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder (1959)." Premiering first in 1996, this historical work chronicles the experience of men working on the chain gangs of the American South. Access to this choreography has been provided to us through the American Dance Legacy Institute and restaged through Labanotation by BDC faculty member, Karena Birk.

Secondly, tap teacher Laura Peterson took our Intermediate and Advanced tap students back to the days of the old-school "hoofers" by teaching them classical work by Buster Brown and The Original Copasetics. The Original Copasetics formed in 1949 after the death of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and were a collective of tap dancers or "hoofers" of the era. Our students will be performing "The Copasetics' Chair Dance," which is part of the Copasetics' legacy.

Lastly, 11 of our Advanced Modern Repertory dancers participated in a week long intensive workshop with Bainbridge Island native Patrick Kilbane (Northwest Dance Project), which resulted in a beautiful representation of today's contemporary dance. This piece will be performed in the evening performances, Tuesday though Saturday. Bainbridge Dance Center is extremely proud of the depth and beauty of our dancers' work and cannot wait to share their performances with you!
