FirstFriday

First Friday's coming to San Jose

This Friday, Oct 3rd

Sonoma Chicken Coop

90 Skyport Drive

San Jose, CA 95110

(near San Jose airport)

First Friday's back in San Jose !!

"Some our best events took place in San Jose in the past at Faz Restaurant, the Decathlon Club, the Biltmore Hotel, the Rusty Scupper, (remember those days J).  We look forward to reconnecting with our South Bay followers and meeting many newcomers.

The birth of First Fridays was in New Jersey in 1988. The Bay Area was the very 2nd city/region to launch First Fridays. It then spread like a wildfire across the US into every major city (Atlanta, DC, NY, Miami, Detroit, etc) and eventually blossomed internationally as well (Toronto, Jamaica, Tokyo, Brazil, etc).

First Fridays was built on providing a format that would allow Black Professionals to meet one another to exchange career, business and non-profit opportunities in a relaxing, professional, yet social atmosphere.

Since the beginning we have expanded to bring such wonderful events as the Annual White & Black Party and now we bring to you our 1st Annual Slash of Pink Party @ Sonoma Chicken Coop (close to Hwys 87, 880 & 101).

We have a lot of exciting events to bring to you in 2015 - Concerts, Destination Travel Trips, Winery Events, etc.

We hope to have you join us this Friday and find out what's new with First Fridays, but if you are unable to attend make sure you join our mailing list or visit our Social Media Facebook and Twitter pages!"

ElectionsElections, Who are You Voting for?

Supervisor Dave Cortese received the endorsements of three local chambers of commerce in his run for Mayor of San Jose; including the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Silicon Valley, Black Chamber of Silicon Valley, and Filipino American Chamber of Silicon Valley. These Chambers represent a wide cross section of the business community in San Jose.

"I'm honored to have the support of local chambers and business leaders. Our city is a vibrant hub of job creation for businesses of all sizes and as Mayor I will work hard to ensure that our city is safe so that businesses can thrive," said Supervisor Cortese.

As a businessman and elected official Dave Cortese has worked closely with local small businesses in San Jose for almost three decades.

Dave is running for Mayor to make San Jose a safer and more inclusive city. He believes that by bringing people together we can make San Jose a better place for future generations. Learn more about Dave at http://cortesecampaign.com/

Small Business is the lifeblood of San Jose

There is nothing that is more important to the growth and vitality of the City of San Jose than small business.  San Jose should support policies that will make it easier for small businesses to do business.

As the former owner of a small business, I am very aware of the challenges that small businesses face.  My business was an IT consulting firm that provided IT support and hardware to public and private entities.  We faced all of the typical challenges of a small business; working capital to cover cash-flow and grow the business, winning new business while being told that we didn't have experience, and having access to information that is critical to the success of a business.

I understand the small business owner's challenges and what it takes to be successful.  Local government can play an important role in helping small business owners.  The City of San Jose has created a small business preference program to give small businesses access to millions of dollars of city contracts.  This program was created and designed to provide access to small businesses knowing that minority businesses would greatly benefit from it.  San Jose can also support small business by reducing fees, creating a more efficient permitting process, and providing access to capital and other resources.

Large companies like Cisco and Adobe staying and growing in San Jose are important, but unless the City of San Jose implements policies that promote small business growth, it will not reap the benefits of the economic growth and opportunities that small businesses create.
