Ashton's Story:
Healthy and Thriving
| | |
When Ashton began displaying early signs of autism, his mother Lisa brought him to a United Way-funded program at Little Red School House, an agency that advances the quality of life for children with, or at risk of, developmental delays and disabilities. Through the program, Ashton learned critical behavioral and learning skills.
Today Ashton is in the second grade, and excelling in school. "A few years ago, we weren't even sure Ashton would ever speak. Now he's thriving," Lisa says.
"Donors before me helped my son. Now, I donate in the hope of helping someone else. I'm paying it forward," she added. | | | | | |

2013 Legislative Agenda
Developing our legislative agenda, like our grants process, is volunteer-led.
In November, the board of directors and vision council volunteers met to craft our 2013 Public Policy Agenda.
Our volunteers debated the issues and prioritized possible issues and narrowed them down to four recommendations:
- Early Learning
- Food Insecurity
- Housing and Homelessness
- Seniors
United Way of Snohomish County crafted our first public policy agenda in 2005. Thank you to all who helped to define our legislative agenda for the year!

MLK Day of Service is Jan. 21
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
This year, approximately 200 high school students from throughout the county are expected to participate in Snohomish County's fourth annual MLK Day of Service on January 21, 2013. During this day of service, teen volunteers will help make a real difference through hands-on work in the community. Teams are led by a Senior Corps or other adult volunteer.
Teens can register online at www.uwsc.org/mlkday.php. |
United Way Receives $440,000 from The Gates Foundation
In December, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced that United Way will receive a $440,000 grant over the next four years. The grant will help fight intergenerational poverty in Snohomish County, which is part of the foundation's Building Community Philanthropy initiative. The funds will also be used to support Snohomish County's Project Homeless Connect.

On Nov. 19, members of United Way's Legacy Circle and long-time United Way supporters gathered at the Hibulb Cultural Center to celebrate four major gifts to The United Way Endowment. The event featured special guest Ralph White, who served as the Executive Director of United Way of Snohomish County from 1967 - 1983.
