2016: YEAR OF SERVICE MESSAGE
WILL BE READ IN PARISHES ON JANUARY 24

His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, has declared 2016 as the "Year of Service." In his Pontifical Message, which will be read in most of our parishes on Sunday, January 24, the Catholicos writes about the vital role of service and describes service at the "Essence of the Christian Faith."  He goes on to show the depiction of service in the Bible and in the writings of the Church Fathers, as well as the role of service as an obligation and duty of all Christians. His Holiness writes, "By declaring the current year The Year of Service, we want to remind our people that it is necessary to participate with great dedication in our nation's noble work, with the brave knowledge that God will bless our service, and history will remember and honor not what we had, but that which we gave, not our beautiful words, but our good deeds."

MAY HE REST IN PEACE
REGARDING THE USE OF SCARVES IN CHURCH AND MORE

As church communities we will do well if we revisit from time to time and examine what we do in our church during the worship and seek to improve ourselves. In the past we have made many adjustments; added or deleted things or changed few rubrics as long as we maintained our core belief prescribed to us by our church fathers. For example, years ago we started handing out to our female parishioners head covers as they approached to receive communion. This year I decided to stop that tradition because of fundamental misconception. Let me explain.

That women should cover their heads in Church was not prescribed by Jesus. Nowhere in the Gospels is there such a suggestion. That tradition was developed in post-resurrection era when the churches were being organized. Depending on the community, certain traditions were upheld. It is St. Paul who wrote first about the issue of covering the heads of women in the church in I Corinthians 11:1-16, because there was a big contention among the parishioners of that church about this issue. Paul, to maintain the unity of the church, deemed it necessary for women to cover their hair. But the same Apostle, when writing about the women in the church in Ephesus did not suggest that women cover their heads but encouraged them to be modest. Women who worshiped in the Christian church should not be given to ostentation, costly attire, and excessive adornment. Neither was seductive or sexually suggestive clothing appropriate. They were not to detract from the worship by drawing attention to themselves. (Read I Timothy 2:9-10)
During the time when we were promoting the head covers, I noticed many oddities which drove me to stop the practice. I will mention two fundamental ones:
1.   Some ladies came to church wearing inappropriate and revealing clothing and dared to approach to receive communion and were given  a head cover. I think before they covered their heads, they should have covered themselves period. So, what is the value of the head cover here I may ask?
2.   I noticed for years that many female parishioners arrived at church around the communion time and hurried to receive communion as if covering their heads made them eligible to do so. I have said many times that prior to coming to communion, you need to be part of Badarak, prepare yourself spiritually and then approach to the body of Christ. Communion taken without faith and proper preparation, such as being on time to liturgy or confession of sins, has no merit, but will have an adverse effect. Hear the warning of St. Paul: "Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. (I Cor. 11:27-2)

What we learned from our past experience was that it is a nice tradition for women cover their heads in the church but not mandatory. I would suggest strongly that those who would like to follow this custom bring their own head covers and wear it during the entire duration of the Badarak and be concerned as well about being spiritually ready to approach the body of Christ. Before covering the head, purge the soul first and wear appropriate clothing as well.

SUNDAY BIBLE READING
THIRD SUNDAY AFTER NATIVITY

The reading from St. Paul's letter to Titus 1:1-11
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness,2in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior; To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you-if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.

The Gospel reading is from St. John 7:37-52

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'" Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This really is the Prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" So there was a division among the people over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" 46The officers answered, "No one ever spoke like this man!" The Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived? 48Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed." Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee."
