On Thursday, February 12, the Armenian Inter-Communal Committee of Philadelphia held its joint commemoration of the Feast of the Vartanants Saints at  Armenian Martyrs' Congregational Church.  The program, with the participation of the clergy of the Philadelphia Armenian community and the students of the Armenian Sisters Academy, was well received by those gathered in the Sanctuary.  Prayers, hymns, Scriptural readings, songs and recitations paved the way for guest speaker, Mr. Hovannes Khosdeghian, to deliver his presentation, entitled: "Vartan and the Rebirth of Armenia".  Referring to the Old Testament in the Bible and Armenian history, Mr. Khosdeghian enlightened the audience by stating that from the beginning of time the same hands God created for all people were used for tearing down and for building up.  He went on to say that although destruction was great during the Avarayr war and the Vartanants saints suffered at the hands of their enemies, there also resulted a building up--building churches, building the foundation of the faith.  After the program everyone convened in the church hall for refreshments and fellowship.

Pictured are Mr. Khosdeghian, Hrant Jilozian, Chairman of the Philadelphia Inter-Communal Committee, Rev. L. Nishan Bakalian, Pastor of Armenian Martyrs' Congregational Church, V. Rev. Fr. Oshagan Gulgulian, Pastor of Sts. Sahag and Mesrop Armenian Apostolic Church, Archpriest Fr. Nerses Manoogian, Pastor of St. Gregory the Illuminator Church, Sr. Emma Moussayan, Principal of the Armenian Sisters Academy, and Archdeacon Charshafjian of St. Mark's Armenian Catholic Church.

Red Carpet Paregentan was Success

Despite the snow, the winds and frigid temperatures,  an enthusiastic crowd came together and enjoyed Red Carpet style  18th Paregentan dance in Founders Hall.

As guests entered into the foyer,  they were welcomed  and  interviewed on red carpet which was shown live in the Founders Hall. This live feed was set up by Shant Aghajanian and Philip Nigon. We thank them.

The senior dancers of Meghry were fabulous in their Spanish dance  wearing appropriate Spanish costumes.Thank you dancers.

The food was excellent, compliments of Matilda Frounjian. The fabulous centerpieces were arranged and donated by Mr. & Mrs. Jaque and Zarouhi Derderian.

Kudos to the organizing committe members, Lena Streeter, Chairlady, Lydia Arakelian, Jeff Selverian, Tamar Panosian, Margie Tavakalian, Nora Babaian, Garine Khararjian, Zarouhi Derderian, Yeretzgin Manoogian and Taleen Streeter.

A Parishioner Needs your help

Last week a fire destroyed several homes in Norristown, PA.  One of our parishioners barely escaped into the frigid night air, being guided out by firefighters. He lost his apartment and all his belongings; he did not have any insurance.  The American Red Cross provided him with something to wear; now, it's our turn.  He's moved into another apartment, but has nothing.

We're asking our church community to come together and offer aid to this senior citizen.  A collection box will be placed in the narthex (back of the church) for the next few weeks for clothing donations.  He wears large undershirts, size 16.5" shirts with 32" sleeves, 38" pants; he needs a large winter coat, wool hat and scarf.

By God's grace, a bed with linens, a dining room set, and some other furniture have been donated to him through a former parishioner.

We need a few strong men to help him move all this into his new apartment in Norristown (he does not drive).  A moving van will be available.

So far I have 4 volunteers. We will pick up a U-Haul truck and start the operation by 9:30 A.M. We can use more hands. If you are doing nothing tomorrow, please meet us at the following address: 3105 SHirlene Road, Norristown, PA. 19149. Der Hyr's Cell is 610 308 6305.

What a great way to start the Lenten season. Remember, Lent is not about fasting only but doing good. Prophet Isaiah says about fasting:

" Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?   Will you call this a fast,  and a day acceptable to the Lord?  "Is not this the fast that I choose:   to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free,  and to break every yoke?  Is it not to share your bread with the hungry  and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?" (Isaiah 58:5-7)

ORAL HISTORY

As we are commemorating the centennial of the Armenian Genocide, I would like to bring to your attention, that in late 70s and 80s, various organizations had the great idea of interviewing the survivors of the Genocide with the goal of perpetuating their stories. Interviews were done but unfortunately the project  was lost in filing cabinets. This was the time that those interviews were published as the survivors are all departed from this world.

Happy to say that, thanks to Karen Melikian, few of those interviews were found in Yeghishe Melikians papers and I took the initiative to publish gradually in my weekly Chronicles. If there are any volunteers there to retype the interviews please let me know.

Here we go!

This Sunday is called "Sunday of the Expulsion"

This Sunday speaks about the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the paradise because of their disobedience. (Read Genesis 3.) It reminds us as well that, through this penitential season of Great Lent, with prayers and fasting we need to strive to find favor from God and restore in us the image of God. In today's term, God is giving us a second chance to come to our senses and long for His abundant grace.

            Lyrics of this Sunday:

"O Lord, You first gave the holy observance of the law in the paradise. But the first creatures disobeyed you by eating the forbidden fruit and thus tasted the bitterness of sin and death. Therefore, enable us to taste the sweetness of your commandments."  (Armenian Hymnal)

Sunday's Bible Readings

Second Sunday of Great Lent, Sunday of Expulsion

Romans 12:1-13:10

I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.  2 Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.  3 For by the grace given to me I bid every one among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith which God has assigned him.  4 For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.  6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.  9 Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; 10 love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor.  11 Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord.  12 Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.  13 Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality.  14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.  15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.  16 Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; never be conceited.  17 Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  18 If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.  19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."  20 No, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head."  21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Romans 13

1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.  2 Therefore he who resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.  3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of him who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain; he is the servant of God to execute his wrath on the wrongdoer.  5 Therefore one must be subject, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience.  6 For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing.  7 Pay all of them their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.  8 Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.  9 The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet," and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."  10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Matthew 5:17-48

"Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them.  18 For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.  19 Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.  20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.  21 "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.'  22 But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire.  23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,  24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.  25 Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison;  26 truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.  27 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.'  28 But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.  30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.  31 "It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.'  32 But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.  33 "Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.'  34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.  36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.  37 Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil.  38 "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'  39 But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; 40 and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; 41 and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.  42 Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you.  43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'  44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.  46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?  47 And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?  48 You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
